upgrade to 1080 from 780 for 4k or wait for 1080 ti

I know that there are tons of similar topics about the 1080 cards now, but I need an advice for my scenario.

I have the EVGA 780 ftw card (not ti) and have the Acer x34 predator monitor (not actually 4k but ultrawide, 3440x1440). Newer games on that resolution are performing poorly (on high settings with that resolution even less than 20 fps which is unplayable and need to be played on lowered resolution and/or graphics).

I am considering upgrading to the 1080 card but some people say to wait for the 1080 ti to come since it will be much better at 4k gaming. Should I wait (and "suffer" :na:) for the next 6-9 months for the 1080 ti or upgrade to the 1080 now?

P.S.: buying a 1080 (or 1070) now and upgrading later is not an option.

I'd hold out for the 1080 Ti in all honesty if it were me. Even with fair warning, I'd feel bummed out if I got the 1080 and realized that the performance isn't where you want it to be.

You are a little like me. I sold one of my card and try to sell the other one because I am playing at 4k and need a single card system. Problem with SLI is that you cannot do that later or it is really hard since you need the exact same card.

I am waiting for Vega in October, but I might end up with a 1080 GTX.

The answer to your question depends on how ugerntly you need the new GPU, how much you are willing to spend and how long you plan to go until your next upgrade.

If you can suffer through reduced quality settings for another 6~8 months, Vega and GTX 1080Ti should offer a significant Performance boost from the current GTX 1080; which will allow you to push off your next upgrade even longer.
Likely, their launch prices will be similar to the GTX1080 list prices as well; making them an even better deal.

If you are really suffering and can not wait, by all means, get a new card now!
Well, by now I really mean give it a week or two for supply to stabalize, and give Polaris a Chance to drive nVidia's prices down.

If you can find a microcenter, you can get a refurbished cheap 1080 with a 2 year warranty from them (you goto pay extra) and in 2 years time, you can bring the card in dead or alive and they will give you what you paid for the card (minus the warranty of course). That way you are sort of renting a card unless you want to keep it.

I got a 295x2 myself in January and I'm waiting for 1080ti or new Titan.

I changed from a GTX780SC to a GTX980ti when I bought a 4k monitor.
It allowed me to play my games at a steady 60fps. That would include skyrim and civ 4 & 5.
A GTX1070 would perform similarly.
If your budget allows a GTX1080, I think you would be very pleased at 3440 x 1440.
Because QHD resolutions are denser, you will always have the option if needed to reduce your levels of AA; That is one of the more performance demanding options.

There is no telling if/when a GTX1080ti will arrive, what it will cost, or how it will perform.
One thing is certain, a top card will command a premium price initially.

Well, since nVidia hasn't even announced that they're considering releasing a GTX 1080Ti, nevermind even providing an estimated release date (& certainly not anything definitive), that's not exactly a point in favor of waiting for it.

As for whether it's a good idea to upgrade now, first off which games is your 780 currently struggling in? One thing to check would be the benchmarks we've seen so far on the GTX 1080, because if they're at least the ballpark of what you'd want (i.e. 60FPS @ Ultra quality), then why wait?

They are working on a new boards, one for titan and 1080ti most likely.

"The existence of the pascal chip powering this particular graphics card has been speculated upon but nothing had come to light so far."

"It is worth pointing out that there have been no confirmed reports or leaks regarding this particular chip. No Zauba entries, no die shots yet."

"Notice the fact however, that this post is tagged as an editorial, so everything mentioned here is based upon my personal insights as opposed to established facts (and therefore have a non-zero probability of being off the mark)."

All direct quotes from the article, which again means it's (so far) 100% speculation, with nothing official from nVidia (& not even any "leaked" sources) to corroborate it.

So again, if the 1080 gets the OP the performance boost he's looking for, & a 1070 (or the upcoming RX 480) won't do it for him, then there's no point in waiting for a (so far) non-existent GPU to (maybe) see the light of day.

imho Acer x34 predator + gtx1080 are the perfect match for gaming.
I dont think OP should go 4k: No present 4k monitor could really beat Acer x34 predator gaming experience.
And i think the diminishing return from such upgrade will prevent any meaningful one for quite some time yet.
