My desktop hard drive died long ago. Asus tech support ain't helping. I figured I should just get a new windows 8 license and install on my new ssd. But problem is, I'm not sure if my mother board will accept a new windows 8 copy because the motherboard already has the key to the factory installed windows 8. It might reject the new copy

Solution
Before you install disconnect all other drives except the new ssd.
Then, go into the BIOS and under "boot" disable CSM and enable "secure boot".

Get the latest drivers from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25165/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-RAID-Driver?product=55005
File: f6flpy-x64.zip. Unzip it to a folder on a USB drive(it can be teh one with windows on it).

Start the install and when it asks where to install hit "have disk" and point it to the folder you put the above files in.

then hit shift +f10 then:
diskpart
list disk
select disk x(x beeing the drive you are installing to)
clean
convert gpt
exit
exit

then hit refresh and select "create" to make a partition for windows as big as you require it...

That is not how it works.

You can reinstall the same copy of Windows you previously had with the same key on a new hard drive if you are using the same motherboard. If the license becomes invalid, contact Microsoft and inform them the HDD died and you are doing a reinstall and they will fix it for you.

Wow! People still do all these steps to just install an OS in 2016? I remember doing this diskpart nonsense back in windows XP days but not since Windows 7 and I could have sworn that Windows 8 does all this for you. I also do not understand the need to convert to GPT when the OP is installing on a SSD because chances are their SSD will not be over 2TB so the normal MBR will be just fine.

Booting in UEFI mode requires that the boot disk is using GPT. MBR will force the use of legacy BIOS mode, which means longer boot times and no Secure Boot. Inform yourself better before posting.
