AMD Radeon 6950 Gigabyte power consumption too high for 500W PSU?

I was recently given an AMD Radeon HD 6950 Gigabyte graphics card for free from a friend. I decided to buy a new PSU unit in order to handle the card properly ( Corsair CX 500M ), however after I installed them both, the computer constantly crashed when loading video intensive tasks like games and even Youtube videos. When I reinstalled my old card, everything worked fine.
( UPDATE: My older video card now crashes as well.)

Is there a way to run the 6950 with my current power supply, or is the consumption just too high?

The 500W PSU is the minimum recommended for the HD-6950, and the Corsair CX (while not the best) should be fine. I would suspect the reason you were given the card free was because it has issues, maybe (?)
What else do you have running off the 500W PSU?

Yah, the 500 watt psu should be enough to feed your gpu. But u know gpu is not responsible for eat up all wattage from your psu. Cause u told that 500 watt is good enough for your old system. I am not sure but I think your total required wattage (without 6950) is fulfilled by your psu. But when u add 6950, your total system wattage should increase but your psu could not deliver the required wattage of your system. Before taking any psu upgrade step, please check or calculate your total system wattage. From this calculation u get some idea about our wattage consumption. Here u can check your wattage - http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/

My friend had been running the card the previous couple of days before he gave it to me, so it should be fine.

The only other thing of significance I can think of that's running from the PSU is the CPU which is an AMD FX-8120
(UPDATE: My older card is also crashing while playing games. :( )

I don't remember bumping it, would the signs be obvious if I did?

My GPU temps while idle seem to be around 41 °C. (With my older card)
As for the CPU, I'm not quite sure.

So after downloading MSI Afterburner, I checked my CPU temps and they seemed to hover around 58 - 59°C while idle.
The temps increased to about 61°C before crashing abruptly during gameplay. :|
