Hi everyone. I've had a lot of trouble with installing a new graphics card over the past couple of days and am really stuck for an answer. I'm upgrading from an EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 FTW to a Gigabyte GTX 980.

Firstly, I accidentally unplugged the SSD sata cable from the mobo when placing it in my PC which I didn't realise at first, and caused a huge heap of issues. Once I figured that out, my PC was extremely buggy. Kept getting BSODs each time with a different error code, eventually my PC got stuck in a restart to BSOD loop, so I put my old card back in and did a system restore to last week which seemed to work.

Cutting a long story short, once I could actually get into windows after system restore, I ran CC cleaner and it was a lot more stable. I installed the latest drivers for my old card, uninstalled everything Nvidia, restarted, ran CCleaner, shut down, installed the new card, installed new drivers, but it still doesn't work 100%

I still get crashes during software, especially games. I was trying to load Rome 2 Total war which previously worked fine, but it crashed if I did a benchmark test or loaded into the game. Xcom2 would also crash on the main menu. Now I can't even get into Rome 2 as when I open it it crashes loading up. Sometimes I get a BSOD and it's different every time, but common errors are:

-System service exception
-System thread exception not handled

Also, probably related, Geforce Experience crashes most times when I try to open it. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, does not help. Chrome too now suddenly goes "Aww, snap" in the middle of browsing some sites.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Does no difference either.

My system:

Asus MAXIMUS V GENE, Intel Z77
Intel Core i7 3770K,1155, Ivy Bridge
Samsung 500GB SSD
2TB Hitachi 0F12115 Deskstar 7K3000 HDD
LiteOn IHOS104-06 4xBlu-ray, 8x DVD
850W XFX PSU
16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance

Old GPU - EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 FTW
New GPU - Gigabyte GTX 980.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

First tbh, go get rid of ccleaner first (Nothing related to issue but this is known to cause problems, an alternative is Glary Utilities.)

Okay now fetch this program http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
^ Use this program and get rid of all drivers and reboot ur system then go to nvidias website and install the latest drivers NOT FROM THE INCLUDED DISK but the website itself.
This should be enough to fix the problem.

the issue is with ur video card drivers and nothing else all those error messages are pointing this

IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL: Error causes when a driver is accessing memory and in the processes it was interrupted.

System service exception: when there are multiple instanses of a single separate driver active.

Thanks for the fast response and will try this out. I have a couple of questions.

I have an on board graphics chip which has Intel drivers. Do I need to uninstall these as well?
Also what sort of issues does CCleaner cause?

Cheers.

give a try to glary utilities apart from personal preference and wanting people to use something better there is nothing wrong with it nor something good with it, do use the DDU and use it to get rid of "ALL KINDS of drivers"
Yes get rid of all drivers including the intel one.
once the driver issue is resolved ill get to tell u about ccleaner

Unfortunately it didn't work.

I started DDU in safe mode, uninstalled Intel drivers and it restarted back into Windows. Started DDU in safe mode again and uninstalled Nvidia drivers. When I got back into Windows I installed the latest Nvidia drivers downloaded from their website and once completed, I restarted the PC.

I still get "geforce experience has encountered an error and must close" when I try and open it, and Rome 2 still crashes on startup.

Thanks anyway andi appreciate the help. I have windows 10 and I might try to format. A friend also mentioned something about updating the firmware of my motherboard which I could try.

It would be good to tell somehow whether the card is broken or it's a software issue.

Hopefully this will help diagnose the problem a bit better. I went into my bios this morning and changed one of the settings: "Load gamers' OC profile" was activated and I switched it off. I got stuck in a BSOD restart loop. Switched it back on again and I could load back into windows.
