I had to replace my shorted asus motherboard with a new evga. and I know I'm supposed to install new os. Problem is my original os was a downloaded free version of windows 10 I have no installation disk. Windows 10 is on a Samsung 512 gb pro and also on wd 3.0 tb backup. How do I go about using the Samsung ssd with the new mobo? THANKS

Well, the licensing idea with windows 10 upgrades (from 7 and 8) goes like this,
you install it from within windows as upgrade (and it looks up your license key) and activates win10 automatically.
OR
you install it from download tool and create bootable dvd/usb and enter old win7/8 license when asked.

both options will tie said old license key to the motherboard at time of install. (only exception is if 7/8 was retail, in which case you might be able to reinstall 10 with said key on new motherboard)

thus.. after motherboard swap, said license is 99% likely invalid (most people tend to buy cheaper OEM licenses which is what pre-built computers also have) and your only option would be to call microsoft (activate through phone, windows...

A 'downloaded free version'?
Downloaded from where, exactly?

OK then.
The issue is...Your Win 8.1 Upgraded to Win 10 is a Digital Entitlement, for that particular hardware.

1. You will need to do a full reinstall with this new hardware.
2. You will have to call Microsoft and plead your case for a broken and replaced motherboard, and reuse of that Win 10.
For an actual broken and replaced motherboard, this will probably work.

To obtain the install media? Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

so.. try with original win7/8 license key, if it wont work, call MS, if it wont work.. buy new windows license.

No.
I'm not sure what storagecraft is, but whatever backup it made was a backup from the original hardware.
You can't install a new OS, and then apply some backup over top of that. It doesn't work like that.
