Hi everybody,
I am planning to get the new RX 480 8GB

My specs are :-
RAM : 8GB DDR3 bus 1333
Mother Board : MSI 970a g45
PowerSupply : XFX 550w core edition
CPU : AMD FX 4100 black edition Quad Core 3.6 GHz

and I have some questions

I dont have enough money to upgrade my PC so will my cpu work well with the RX 480 or i must upgrade it ?

Will the 8GB ram be enough or i should get another 8GB RAM ?

and if i got a new 1600MHz ram will it work at 1600MHz or it wont work properly because of my 1333MHz memory that i already have ?

Thanks ...

Solution
If you get new ram at 1600 paired with the ddr3 1333 it will run at 1333 (match the speed of the slowest ram). Your cpu will likely be bottlenecking the 480, it's at the lower end of the performance scale for cpu's. If you're low on funds for upgrading you may be better off saving up for either skylake or zen, zen won't be out until the end of the year some time.

8gb is enough though the slower speed may hold you up some. Eventually moving to faster ram would be a plus though skylake and zen both use ddr4 so might be worth holding off until you make a more significant upgrade.

With a lower budget you can either keep making slight upgrades one part at a time or save up for a bigger overhaul. The more upgrades you make to your current...

With a lower budget you can either keep making slight upgrades one part at a time or save up for a bigger overhaul. The more upgrades you make to your current system the more you're invested into it and the more it takes away from moving you forward into something newer/stronger for gaming. They would be upgrades but not worth the money in my opinion.

Ddr4 and ddr3 are around the same price. The money you spend on ddr3 1600 or 1866 would have bought you 8gb of ddr4 2100 or 2400. The money you spend on another fx cpu is money that would have been better spent toward zen or skylake rather than more of the same. Your motherboard isn't really strong enough in terms of voltage regulation and things for overclocking or powering larger 6/8 core cpus. With a 4 core cpu you might get away with a slight overclock if you have an aftermarket cooler but not sure I'd push it too much with that motherboard.

It would require some patience but I think you'd be happier and get more for your money saving up and doing a proper upgrade, something that gets you away from that motherboard, out of the fx lineup, faster ram etc. Just my .02 worth.

Solution
The RX 480 is more powerful than your CPU can drive well. The CPU will be limiting and be more limiting in the future as games get more demanding.

There is no CPU I would recommend for that motherboard, even the FX 6300 overclocked will stress your VRM.

Your only path forward is a complete re-build if you want to use the RX 480 to full effect.
