GTX 1080 vs 3x R9 480

Solution
I have not knowledge of VR. But it would depend on the Scaling of the games you play. Which you can take a look at crossfire support in some benchmarks.

Threeway SLI is still a hassle, talk to anyone whose done it and they'll agree. It's one of the reasons why NVIDIA officially announced that they didn't support it with the 1000 series. A single more powerful GPU is almost always better than two lesser GPUs.

You may be able to get away with 480's in two way SLI with better performance without many issues, but ultimately my earlier statement stands - always choose a more powerful GPU over SLI.

However, the 480 has yet to be tried and tested, so everything we know about SLI scaling could be disproved (though it's doubtful).

More about SLI Scaling...

Not to be nit picky but it's crossfire and it will depend if he is Gameing or doing video rendering.

at the r9 480 announcement they said 2 480 are faster then one 1080. and the new gen of amd gpus are suppose to me quite a bit cooler compared to past amd gpus.

oh edit, its crossfire not sli, and multi gpus are better for vr then a single
