dont question the cou with the graphics card didn't have enough money at the time for mobo, ram, cpu so I had to compromise.
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640
Cooler: Geminii S524
GPU: GTX 960 EVGA SSC
RAM: 8GB DDR2
HDD: 1TB 7200RPM WD
PSU: CX600
MOBO: doesn't matter what it is it's going away
So in a few months I'll have some money for a new MOBO, RAM, CPU I was thinking a I7 6790k since I can over clock with the cooler I have. I won't be able to get a better GPU so ill have to stay with the 960 but I want something powerful so I only have to upgrade my GPU later down the road!
Thanks in advance open to solutions and discussion!

If you're asking about general upgrades - in order of preference this is what I would do:

Hdd to SSD - atronomical peromance increase in general day to day computing. Putting games on there has made a world of difference for my general usage / gaming experience

CPU upgrade (6700k?) - it looks like the next thing bottlenecking your system is the cpu. Athlon is old man haha. Authough it's a pain having to get a new mobo

Thanks for the help! My Athlon still runs faster then my grandma so that's a plus and I can OC it to 3.3ghz with no problem with stock and recently upgraded to a after market big badass cooler! Any help with ram and a new mobo would be great!

No worries :)

Another reason I would seriously consider upgrading your processor and mobo (if you have the budget) is that you can upgrade to ddr3 ram memory. Unlike ddr4, ddr3 was a decent upgrade from its predecessor.

If you can give a rough budget allocation then we can help suggest a mobo and cpu.

Just be careful though - once you upgrade, you can never go back to your old slow system speeds again!

Sounds good! It's your system so you build it how you like.

However, if you wanna save a bit of extra cash to save towards more meaningful hardware changes - From a budget conscious perspective: CPU seems a little intensive. In honesty most people (myself included) don't need an i7, it's just a premium. If you're main focus is gaming then pick up an amazing value AMD 8 core FX (or an i5 4-series if you are keen on intel).

You could also start with just 1 stick of 8GB RAM (don't worry about the speed of the RAM, it doesn't make any real difference)

Finally - What is your PSU? If it's not a reputable make then I would start to think about upgrading it after 6 years if it's that old.

That might save you enough money for a SSD (Even 128GB to run windows on makes a world of difference)
