So, in 2012 I built a pretty expensive pc for the time (the whole thing costed about 2000 dollars) which nowadays is obviously outdated. Anyways, I'm going to the US next month and I want to know what changes can be done to update my build, cause I don't want to change everything since im building a new cpu in 2018. Sorry for bad english and here is the current setup:
motherboard: asus rampage iv formula
graphic card: gtx 680 (not overclocked, planning to do it after i get back)
cpu: i7 3820k 3.6 ghz
ram: 8,00GB Single-Channel DDR3, 800MHz
psu: tx 750w corsair
ssd: 111GB ATA Corsair Force GT SCSI

Solution
A 1080 would be a massive waste at only 1080p. Upgrade to 1440p if you can carry the monitor back home, add two more 1080p ones for triple screen gaming if you have the space or dash it all and get an HTC Vive :D. If none of those options are possible, then go with a GTX 1070 or, depending on how good benchmarks are, the RX 480. The 1070 will be good to go for years at 1080p, seeing as it's performance is only slightly less than a GTX Titan.

The only thing in need of an upgrade is the GPU. Everything else is fine; maybe another 8GB stick of RAM if anything. Go for the GTX 1080 if you can afford it; otherwise, get the GTX 1070 or RX 480 depending on your budget. What resolution do you game at?

yes that was what i was thinking too, perhaps a new cooler would be nice as well, since my pc does tend to overheat as I play. I game at 1080p.

Hmmm, thanks a lot dude! Unfortunately I can't bring any monitors as it takes massive space but I will definitely see if a 1070, or at least a 980, is a viable option (a Titan is out of the question :p).

How about a Vive? VR is really taking off now. Don't consider a 980 unless you get it very cheap, the 1070 beats it out and comes close to a Titan Black. I believe you misunderstood me, I am not recommending you buy a Titan. If the 1070 is not an option get the RX 480 8GB; it handles any game at 1080p easily.
