There are a few ways to tell if there is a physical problem with your 2Tb storage drive.
The first is to listen to it.
When a drive is in good working condition the first two things you will hear is the disk platter of the drive spin up.
after the disk reaches it`s maximum stated rotation speed, you will hear a single short click from the drive.
This where the drives read and write heads are unlocked and moved or positioned over the magnetic disk platter ready for any read or write operation of the drive.
Any other than the two sounds, such as a repeated chain of clicks or ticking at a set pattern of a few seconds.
Can indicated that the read and write heads of the drive cannot read information from the magnetic disk platter.
The cause this is often down to is if the drive in question has been subjected to a sharp short impact such as the tower or case the drive is housed in being dropped from a height say for example it it resided on the top of the desk and then fell off hitting the floor.
In some cases the damage can be minor, and all that is required is for the disk to be scanned for errors.
Any drive you have or put in a system needs to have a file system on it, but if at any point the file structure becomes damaged or corrupted, when connected to your system it can cause the freezing of windows OS when trying to load it.
If no information at all can be read from the drive, or the drive is checked by windows as it sees another storage device, due to the fact the read and write heads of the drive are physically damaged.
And it worked fine, the last time it was used by yourself it is a safe bet to conclude something physically happened to cause the drive to fail.
If you have a windows Os disk for your system.
Use the repair tools option of the OS install disk, and with the 2tb hard drive connected scan the 2tb will scandisk or chkdsk.
