Hello,

I have been hearing scratching sounds from my hard drive(I think). I recently got this PC as a used laptop so I have no idea if I caused this. However, I did try to swap out a RAM stick(Which didn't work, the PC didn't boot, but after swapping it back with the correct RAM stick, it booted perfectly). The sound is very hard to detect. I may just be paranoid but I want to make sure, as I have lost another laptop this way once.

(EDIT) Also, very rarely I get the BSOD of "Watchdog Violation".

Are you sure that it's that HDD and not a fan?

Is there a way to see which one it is?

If it's a laptop and you have the proper screwdriver, you can take off the cover on the bottom. Depending on where the two hardware items a located in your case, it should give you a rough idea of which it will be. If both are next to each other just listen really closely to see if the sound is coming from the HDD or the fan. It should be pretty obvious at that point since you can already hear it through the case.
If your HDD is creating the sound, prepare to do a back up of your information and get another hard drive sooner than later. Your drive might be on the verge of dying and I recommend an SSD as a replacement. If it is your fan, then you can either look up to see what type of fan you have and what you can replace it with or you can contact the manufacturer of the laptop and see what they can do to help. Also, before you do anything, check to see if opening the case will void any warranties, if there are any, and check the case to see if any plastic pieces broke off. We've seen some students coming into my store with vents broken and the plastic grill gets lodged into the case somewhere.
