Is a single GTX 970 good enough for comfortable 1440p gaming?

Hello,

I am currently choosing a new monitor as my previous 1080p one broke after many years; my goal is a solid 60 fps on some of the latest triple A titles on high-ultra settings. I've settled on g-sync and I want to make the move to 1440p as it's a more future proof resolution, but I am afraid that my gtx 970 just won't cut it.

My original plan was to buy a 2k monitor when I upgrade my rig to the 1070 or 1080 in the future, but the fact that I have to buy a monitor right now puts me in an awkward position: I don't want to game on 1440p if it means having to crank down the settings or getting fps drops, but buying a 1080p monitor in mid 2016 also feels bad.

If you were me, would you buy a 1080 monitor or opt for 1440? Is it viable to buy a 1440p monitor and simply scale down demanding games to 1080p until I upgrade my GPU?

Thanks.

Solution

yes

a gtx 970 should easily do high settings ~60 fps at 1440p on most games
for 2k a r9 390 is better, however wait a bit for the rx 480!!! same performance as a gtx 980 almost same power draw and only 200 dollars.

on topic: yes it will give u smooth gameplay on high don't push it to ultra for certain games like the witcher 3.
for benchmarks check out digital foundry on youtube.

Thanks. Nvidia's Dynamic Super Resolution can put the same strain on your GPU as though you were using an actual 1440p display, right? If so, then maybe I can simulate how it would affect my system without having to buy the monitor.
