Good afternoon folks

Looking for some input on how to set-up some access points in my home network. What I have is a couple of Unifi APs and I'm wondering if I should be looking for a PoE unmanaged, smart, or managed switch. Nothing really complex going on with our home network otherwise. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Maybe none of the above ?

A PoE switch will put out 48volts using 802.3af or 802.3at. ubiquiti like many vendors confuse everyone by calling stuff that is not a 802.3 standard PoE. It is proprietary and many times only their power injectors work. These run at different voltages which means they can not go as far as the standard PoE. The AP must request the power from the switch using a special protocol defined in the 802.3a standard, the ap that use proprietary adapters do not do that. Good thing I suppose 48volts can fry things pretty easy so the switch never gives it to devices that do not ask.

Ubiquti sell both type of AP you must look closely at the specs and find one that supports 802.3af.

There are some unmanged PoE switches but many have at least a minimal ability to manage/configure the device. I would always prefer to be able to get into the switch so you can troubleshoot issues.
