I'm having an issue with a couple games I've gotten from Steam. When I try to start the game, it goes through the 'First time setup', then nothing happens. There's no error, the game just fails to open.

I've tried all of the following:

    Downloaded the demo
    Downloaded the full game
    Installed / reinstalled multiple times
Torrented a copy, thinking that maybe Steam was the issue

I'm not sure what I could try to resolve this, since there's no error message. Any help would be appreciated =)

Ack, sorry! Thought I did!

Unclaimed World
Cell HD: Emergence

There are a few more, but those are the two that I've bought (the others were only demos). Most other games run fine.

That's generally a user profile corruption, try creating another user account and log into it and then run steam.

you can also
try reregistering kernelbase.dll and check.

a. Click Start and type cmd in start search. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
b. Type "regsvr32 KERNELBASE.dll" without the quotes and Press Enter.
c. Restart your computer and check.

I have another user account, set up by Adobe tech support when I had an issue with Creative Cloud. It gives the same error.

I tried your second suggestion and get the error "The module KERNELBASE.dll was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Make sure that KERNELBASE.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."

Is there a way I can re-acquire the dll? I don't want to use a dll download site unless absolutely necessary ^^;

Other things I've tried:
sfc /scannow
virus scan
checking recycle bin
all drivers are up to date
windows is up to date
the computer is very new, so I doubt the memory/hdd are having errors or failing

I've done almost everything on this list: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/kernelbase-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm

The few things from that list I haven't tried (registry cleaning, testing hdd, testing memory) I'm doing now. I don't want to do a clean install if I can avoid it.

What exact version of Windows are you running, I can find a safe DLL and match the build...

If it's windows 10
http://www.howtogeek.com/236195/how-to-find-out-which-build-and-version-of-windows-10-you-have/

If we fail at getting the DLL in place (sounds like it's missing) you might have to invite someone trusted to render technical support via remote access and see if your windows build can be repaired/saved... other than that re installation is probably all that's left.

Whew! Ok sorry for the really late reply! I kept getting a message saying I was banned - turns out it was related to VPN software.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 1511 OS Build 10586.420

I tried restarting in safe mode a couple different times (used msconfig to tweak startup settings), and was unable to overwrite the version of the dll that I have.

Welp, that's not what it says this time. Now it says it's found corrupt files, but is unable to fix some of them, and the details are in the CBS.Log

I checked the log, but it's HUGE and I'm not sure what to search for.

I went through the recommended instructions, but had issues on the step that asks you to get a copy of install.wim

After I mounted Windows.iso I checked the sources folder, and I don't have install.wim - just install.esd
