So my PC has been randomly crashing and restarting lately, and I'm pretty sure its hard drive related, but let me explain the history of it. This is the first PC that I built approximately 2 years ago. I could've done a better job, but it's worked pretty well. However, about 3 months ago we had some remodeling done in my house, and my computer took in a lot of dust. I attempted to vacuum it out, but there's still a little in there. Anyway, I had some issues getting my computer to start back up afterwards, but switching my hard drive connection around between ports and readjusting it, seemed to fix it (Note I had to do this a few more times over the following month, but it eventually started working without any more fiddling with it). Recently, like I stated previously, it has begun crashing occasionally (once every 2-4 days generally). It's not a huge deal, and I can ignore it mostly, but I'm curious if it could in fact be a symptom of upcoming hard drive failure. Should I be concerned?

Thanks

Hey there, Matthew.

Well, you can't be 100% sure if this is a hard drive related issue unless you've tested it. Basically the dust should not affect the HDD in any way since it's hermetically sealed and even a single dust particle on the platters might bring it to its end. So, I'd recommend that you backup your data, just to be on the safe side and download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test it for bad sectors and errors.

Other than that, make sure that the computer is not overheating or anything. Check the fans for dust build-up, as this could cause problems.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
