Hi!
I'm looking at investing in a new MOBO and CPU, with a budget at about $650. I'm not interested in AMD (since I currently own a FX-8350 and the games I play aren't well optimized for AMD).

Current components:
GPU: Geforce GTX 970 (ASUS)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB DDR3 PC-12800 1600MHz CL9
Motherboard: ASrock 990FX Extreme4
CPU: AMD FX-8350
CPU-Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO
Case: CoolerMaster Storm Trooper
PSU: (It's at 800W)

I'm willing to upgrade whatever is needed to fit the new build and my budget (at $650)

Thank you for helping me out!

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($314.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z170-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($109.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($31.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $456.86
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Save the extra $200 toward a new GPU, if you want to upgrade. The i7 will be very good for quite a while. You can also save a bit of money if you don't want to overclock by buying a non K cpu.

I might very well invest in this, but I'll wait a little longer to see what people can come up with. Thanks for suggestion!

The best answer-

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($314.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($150.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $525.97

Spend the rest on a ssd or put it towards the gpu upgrade.

Here is the cheapest solution that makes the most impact.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($326.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($129.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $456.98

Performance between the 2 i7s would be practically identical. The 6700k puts you on the newest platform though. The 4790k is still not a bad idea. It allows you to keep using your current RAM.

I would get a ssd either way. It will make a huge impact.

Also, pretty much any i5 would be a significant upgrade over your FX so you don't really NEED an i7. It just lands safely within your budget. Really, you could technically afford one of the new 6 core i7s that were just released.

I'm aiming at investing in a CPU that will pack a punch for a while, therefore a i7 is prefferable. Thanks for the suggestion!
