does pci express x16 work with pci express 3.0?

Hi, i am going to build a computer for the first time in my life. So i don't completely get the different pci slots and what fits together and what doesn't. But does pci x16 fit with pci 3.0?

Uhm... x16 refers to the amount of lanes available on a PCi-E slot. PCI 3.0 x16 is the highest lanes on the most current PCI-E. In relation to expansion cards such as network cards, video cards, etc -- they are inserted into the PCI-E slot of a motherboard (complete with PCI-E cables if necessary for things like high powered video cards).
