I have a dell dimension 4600 with an Intel pentium 4 2.8GHZ/512/533 processor. Can I replace it with a pentium D 945 3.4GHZ/4M/800/05A processor?

Solution

Lien06,

Checking Passmark, there are 48 Dell Dimension 4600 systems tested, and all system are using Pentium 4's - no Pentium D's.

The 4600 system on Passmark with the highest CPU score is using the P4 3.2 with a CPU mark of 410. There is a P4 3.4 with a score of 369.

The Pentium D was a quite poor performer also. The Pentium D 3.4GHz was the 950 and the highest mark for D 950 is 1205 but overclocked to 4.4Ghz- which seems quite amazing.

I have a Dimension 8400 with a P4 630 3.0GHz- one of the first 64-bit CPU's and it still runs all my 2007 programs quite well. However...

Lien06,

I have a Dimension 8400 with a P4 630 3.0GHz- one of the first 64-bit CPU's and it still runs all my 2007 programs quite well. However, on that point, my suggestion if possible would be to sell the Dimension 4600 and add the upgrade budget to buy something with a much higher potential. How about:

Dell Precision T3500 - Intel Xeon W3530 @ 2.80GHz - 10GB RAM - 160GB HDD > sold for $43 +$20 shipping

For only $63, here is a beautifully made workstation with a hyperthreading 2.8 /3.06GHz 4-core /8-thread and 10 GB of DDR3-1066 RAM instead of PC400. This can use two modern150W PCIe x16 graphics cards.

I bought a similar system for $53 (12.15):

Precision T3500 (2011) (Original) Xeon W3530 4-core @ 2.8 /3.06GHz > 4GB (2X 2GB) DDR3-1333 ECC > GeForce 9800 GT (1GB)> WD Black 500GB
[[Passmark system rating = 1963, CPU = 4482 / 2D= 609 / 3D=805 / Mem= 1409 / Disk=1048]

Compare the CPU mark to the highest one possible for the Dell 4600.

And over two weeks upgraded it with a CPU ($60), more RAM ($43) and GOU and drives left over form another upgrade:

Dell Precision T3500 (2011) (Revision 2) Xeon X5677 4-core @ 3.46 / 3.73GHz > 12GB (6X 2GB) DDR3-1333 ECC > Quadro 4000 (2GB) > PERC 6/i + Seagate 300GB 15K SAS ST3300657SS + WD Black 500GB > 525W PSU> Windows 7 Professional 64-bit > 2X Dell 19" LCD
[Passmark system rating = 2751> CPU = 7236 / 2D= 658 / 3D=2020 / Mem= 1875 / Disk=1221]

And the potential is much higher as the T3500 can use 6-core CPU up to 3.47 /.3.73GHz. there is a 4- core @ 3.5 /3.86GHz- a fully moidern speed.

Just a thought, but it is more useful to invest in a technology that can run Windows 64-bit with much higher performance in every way and high upgrade potential.

Cheers,
