My brother ran AVG Tune Up on his Windows 7 PC, unaware that it would cause issues. His computer now only boots to the Asus splash screen (the one that says press F2 or DEL to access the bios menu). We can't access the bios when this screen occurs. Instead, in order to access the bios at all, we have to remove the hard drive.

I am convinced the issue is likely his hard drive (registry was probably messed with?), however I do not know how to address the problem. It doesn't seem like I'm able to get to a Windows boot menu of any kind. Can anyone provide some possibilities for us? Ideally I'd like to be able to system restore him back to before that update, but I'm not sure if his hard drive is beyond fixing at this point.

He has an Asus motherboard if that helps. I'm not sure if we can do anything from the bios menu to solve anything. I did have him load optimized defaults and save those, but that didn't help us boot into Windows.

Solution
The utility would not cause the issue with the BIOS. It's likely that the hard drive just happened to fail when you ran the utility. Try plugging in the drive as a secondary in a computer or with a USB dock or enclosure, see if the system sees it.

Yes. Nothing hardware-wise was changed... the tune-up most likely messed with the registry. Removing the hard drive allows us to access the BIOS menu, but plugging it in leaves us stuck on the Asus splash screen.
