Hey
So as the title says, i don't think my computer is running as good as it should. When i try to play even the most basic games the game lags and is unplayable, when i'm watching HD Movies it also lags. Any help would be appreciated

My Spec:
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64Bit

MotherBoard: ASRock Z87 Extreme3

CPU: Intel Core I7 4770

GPU/Graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 290 947MHz 4GB

RAM: 16GB DDR3

PSU: Corsair RM850

OS Hardrive: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB

5 x External Hardrives

Solution
I would have guessed it was because of the mobo chipset, but I just saw the version of the CPU isn't "unlocked", nvm this.

Is the computer new? my first try would be to apply some new thermal paste to the CPU and see if the issue persists, the CPU fan is spinning, right?

i have the latest drivers for my graphics card. The main games i try to play are Call of Duty, Battlefield and Fallout. The resolution i use is 1920 x 1080. I've tried playing games with high graphics and low graphics but it doesn't make a difference is just lags either way.

I tried fallout and by cpu was up around 20% but GPU was hitting 100% with the fan getting very loud. The Fps was averaged about 12. Also after a couple of minutes of playing the game the fan got very loud and the computer just turned off

Without seeing any info about temps it sounds like it's related, maybe it's going too high and the clock downgrades itself as a "self protection" measure. Install HWMonitor and play Fallout using windowed mode so you can see in "real time" the temps you get from CPU and GPU and reply back here with the info.

@RARRAF my screen is connected through HDMI is that's what you mean. I also checked what was running when starting up and there all that was there was mainly audio and display drivers nothing heavy

I'm not running games off external hard drive I'm using the internal SSD drive. Would the cpu overheating cause my problems?

Yes, when a cpu gets too hot (like over 80+ degrees) it will throttle down it's clock speeds (run slower) to reduce the temperature.

The computer is about a year and a half old. The cpu fan is spinning. I'll try the thermal paste and let you know if it makes a difference

Oh my God that worked thanks so much cpu temperature is way downow but GPU usage and temperature are high when playing a game (100% usage and 78 degrees) is that normal

Brilliant. Last question for you, everytime I turn off my computer I need to plug out all USBs to get it to turn back on. Is this a case of the psu not being powerful enough?

I don't think so, USB energy consumption is really low, the computer doesn't boot at all?
