Okay so I have been talking with some guys on here for about 3 hours now on me deciding what to do and what the best way to upgrade to intel is on a low budget.

One in particular has recommended the i5-3470, Would this be a decent and noticeable difference between the i5-3470 and FX-6300 ?

I have found a i5-3470 for £69 is that a decent deal ?

Solution
Generally speaking, the i3 6100 is on par with older i5's, such as the 2500 and 3470. The i3 4xxx CPUs are slightly slower than older i5's, but you're much more likely to get a great deal on a motherboard.

I'd rank them roughly like this:

i3 2xxx < i3 3xxx < i3 4xxx ~ i5 2xxx < i5 3xxx ~ i3 6xxx < i5 4xxx < i5 6xxx.
The problem with buying older Intel CPUs is that the motherboards are unreasonably expensive most of the time. The CPUs last forever, so they're cheap second-hand, but motherboards are out of production. I would only consider it if you can get a motherboard for around as cheap as a new socket 1151 board.

Thanks, I could have a look on ebay or something like that but that's second hand so not sure on that, What about a i3 4130 that 1150 right ? Haswell ? How would that compare ?

Is this ranking from worst performance to best performance ?
I was also asking if they would be better than a FX 6300 ?

so when you said "the i3 6100 is on par with older i5's, such as the 2500 and 3470." does that mean an older i5 would be cheaper than a i3 6100 or ? what would be the differences ? age and socket ? 2500 is Ivy and sandy bridge socket type ? i3 6100 is skylake ? What would you recommend from haswell or wouldn't you ? im on a very tight budge at the moment at best $150= £110 haswell would allow use of current ram but would need a new mobo too !

Prices are going to vary from place to place.

-Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge (2xxx and 3xxx) motherboards will be the most expensive, because they've been out of production for a while.

-Haswell (4xxx) boards are at the tail-end of production. You can still get a cheap board but prices are starting to rise on many of them.

-Skylake (6xxx) boards are inexpensive because they're currently in production.

An i5 3xxx + motherboard may be more expensive than an i3 6100 + motherboard, which performs similarly. However, Skylake generally requires that you use DDR4 RAM. An i3 4xxx + motherboard will be slower than an i3 6xxx or i5, but may be cheaper, and you can reuse your RAM. It's also the smallest upgrade from your FX-6300. An i5 4xxx is probably the best value since you already have DDR3 RAM, but may be slightly out of your pricerange.

Thanks for the information, I really don't know what to do now then way to many options, big price differences and there is no point getting something that is about to be discontinued mmmmmm....

Well, Haswell motherboards may be at the end of their production, but that doesn't make the CPU any slower. I'm on the fence about whether an i3 6100 is sufficient upgrade from your FX, but an i5 4xxx certainly is.

If you didn't already have RAM, I'd suggest you go for Skylake, but Haswell isn't a poor choice given your circumstances.

What issues are you having with your 6300 that make you want to change??

I honestly wouldn't go less than an i5 has well/skylake personally , if you can't afford that then save up some more.

To a 3470?? Not really worth it as ecky has stated , you can get £40 motherboards new still in the UK butvtheyre real barebones specwise.
The 3470 is honestly not that big an improvement over the 6300 either.

Thanks for the reply, I just fancied going over to intel, seem to be better per single core where at AMD are better under heavy loads. To be honest i think i'm gonna stick with the FX 6300 for now and upgrade my graphics card
