How much can you base clock overclock an i5 6400 with a stock cooler?

I was thinking you might be able to push it to about 3.8GHz and achieve similar temperatures to a 6600k (using a stock cooler) as the i5 6400 is just a lower clocked cpu.

Solution
Intel has mostly removed the ability of some motherboards to do a base overclock.

This can be done via the following methods:

1) Motherboard never supported it to start with

2) Motherboard did but a BIOS update removes it

3) Windows update can also remove this and has done so (I don't know where the code is actually change, but it appears to be in the CPU itself)

So you'd have to look at your exact motherboard first to see if its even possible, but just be aware even if you do it can be taken away.

See info here: http://overclocking.guide/overclocking-non-k-intel-skylake-cpus-performance-tests/
OC i5-6400 is a top performer there.

3.8 GHz is a modest OC that won't require bumping up voltage very much and should be achievable on stock cooler. You could turn up the awesome with a cheap Hyper 212 Evo though. Seeing i5 6400 is such a good OCer, it'd be a shame not to OC higher for free flops.

Also, no need to worry about non K being disabled. Microcode updates are applied by BIOS at every boot up with little to do with OS. Flash to a working non-K OC enabled BIOS and you're good to go.

I'm running a Gigabyte Z170N-Gaming 5 Mini-ITX with an i5-6400 on the F4d BIOS (last version that allows BCLK OC).

i5-6400 @ 4.05GHz
BCLK @ 150
CPU vCore @ 1.20
Stock Cooler w/ 120MM fan right above it (Silverstone Raven Mini-ITX case).
OCCT TMPIN2 is around 63-67C
Gaming (Rise of the Tomb Raider, Elite: Dangerous ...) 58-62C
CPU-Z Validation: http://valid.x86.fr/mrmgzj

FRAPS shows about 30FPS @ Stock, and 41FPS @ 4.05GHz while docked in Elite. I'm pushing a lot of pixels surround monitor setup on 1070.

I suppose the big thing here is why not save money on the MB, get a mid-to-low end Z170 on sale and shoot for a 6600K. Motherboards are where we all drop too much money on fancy-shiny-neat features we just do not need. At least that's my opinion. At the time I picked up my MB for $120.00 sale. Though I see Z170 boards dip below $100.00 often.

I only went this route because I was able to pick up a i5-6400 @ $120.00 8 months ago and kind of lucked into the BCLK overclock thing.
