New RAM - Dominator Platinum or something cheaper?

I'm considering to upgrade my system with a new CPU, Motherboard and RAM. I want to go all-in and buy the new i7-6950x with an Asus Rampage board. I'd have to get new RAM since I don't have DDR4 yet.

Since I'm already going all-in, and those Corsair Dominator Platinums look the best, I was considering this ones. However, is it really worth that extra money? Will my performance be noticeably improved by this RAM?

I currently hold DDR3-2133Mhz G-skills, but never noticed any difference with 1600Mhz RAM some of my friends had. Besides the Mhz, there's something about timings that I don't really know much of.

Where I order 64GB Dominator Platinum on 3333Mhz costs €549. Where 64GB Vengeance on 2400 costs €279. But Vengeances on 3200 costs €409.

Main use of the computer will be running projects with a lot of virtual machines and some occasional gaming.

So my main questions are:
What RAM do you suggest and why?
In what way will expensive RAM be better than the cheaper ones (looking at Mhz and latency)?

Solution
If the looks are worth it to you, get the Dominators, if Performance is the main considereation I'd go with the stronger sticks like the RJ Vs or TriZs mentioned above. I use and test a lot of DRAM and those are the best two lines I've worked with the Vengeance LPX would be prob my third choice

Having high ram frequencies doesn't mean everything. If your onboard IMC can't allow you to go to 3200MHz or beyond then the kit is pretty much either going to be running at 2133MHz or at least at 2400Mhz(manually if the 3200Mhz doesn't kick in with X.M.P). So to answer your first question, if the price of higher spec'd ram has a minor difference in kits of 2133Mhz then pick the higher frequency kit by all means. If you're paying more than double then you'd need to verify that the kit is supported on your board(via the memory QVL from manufacturer site) and their tech support. You can even use their tool.

In real world scenario's you won't be able to tell much from faster spec'd(latency rams) outside of benchmarking. I'd say to stick with whatever sort of timings you can get your hands on.

For DDR4 the higher the numbers for latency the better they are per the increase in frequency. Can you share the links to the aforementioned kits? One another note, can you share a site off which you'd like to purchase from(if not a location of your residency would help) and a budget for your ram? :)

First to keep in mind with the Dominators is you are paying a healthy premium for Corsairs name and the lights ;) The data rate of the DRAM being noticible is based on what you do and how you do it, memory centric apps, using large data sets, multi-tasking, etc all can show gains from faster DRAM as can some games (and more to come) i.e. Fallout 4

Best price to performance looks to be in the 2800-3200 sets, for X99 I'd look to the GSkill RipJaws V or their TridentZ lines of DRAM

Corsair Vengeance 4x16GB @ 2400Mhz €294
Corsair Dominator 4x16GB @3333Mhz €549
Corsair Dominator 4x16GB @3466Mhz €569

Site I buy from
Direct link to a list of RAM that selected

I hope this clears it up a bit. It confuses me where the extra frequency is worth the extra price.

I know, and it would be a reason to buy this, because I really love the looks and name :D
However, I do not want to pay 50% more compared to other RAM with the same performance, cause even when spending this amounts of money, there is a limit.

If your onboard IMC can't allow you to go to 3200MHz or beyond then the kit is pretty much either going to be running at 2133MHz or at least at 2400Mhz(manually if the 3200Mhz doesn't kick in with X.M.P).
I will keep this in mind, and of course overclock to get the RAM's full potential. The Asus Rampage board I had in mind can be easily "overclocked" to reach this frequency. It works practically the same as I "overclocked" my current Sabertooth Z77 to handle the 2133Mhz from my current RAM where 1600Mhz was the limit.

and a budget for your ram? :)
My budget is pretty much based on what you'd say. I don't want to go over €500, but if you could convince me it's worth it, I would. Also, I am willing to pay up to €500, if besides the looks, it also brings significantly better performance compared to the same amount of RAM for €300 or something like that. But if you can convince me that the performance difference hardly matters, and that it's only the looks I would pay €200 extra for, I would have let go of the looks and go for the best value.
