SSD lifetime? how often do you replace it?

i'm used to hard drives and their more predictable and gradual failure, and from my limited experience when my SSD failed it did so in the blink of an eye with no warning.

is that typical? or was that just an isolated failure type? i was able to recover it with some special tools, but it still didn't give me any warnings and went "lights out!" mid-work-session.

how do you manage your SSD life and prepare to swap it out for a replacement when it's too worn out?

and what happens when an SSD is "all used up"? does it just stop working, or does it become read-only, or does it corrupt the hell out of itself?

ignore boot-time discussions...

When an SSD dies it will mostly likely be when it has reached it write limit which with modern SSD huge and i'm talking 1000's of TB's of data. I have had my SSD for nearly a year and it has written near to TB of data. Due to no moving parts it can live for a long time, the only reason it should die before it write limit would be if a faulty part inside dyed.

I have a Samsung EVo 850 250GB, it wont be dying anytime soon.

I have had an SSD fail after about 2 years. Unfortunately unlike hard drives there are no warning signs. Its not typical they are very reliable (especially because they have no moving parts), but in the same respect because they are all electronic, they are on or off like a light switch.

are there OS-independent tools that i can use to check a drive's potential "life remaining"? i only have 2-3 SSDs that i've bought on sale, and they've been used off and on in prior builds, so a new OS would have no idea on past history.
