Which Windows OS should I replace 7 with?

First off I'm basically a power user and a gamer.

I like very much what MS is doing with Windows 10, they're on the right path but still too incompatible for me. Windows 8.1 is a lesser version of Windows 10 but it's more compatible and stable.

I'm worried because Windows 7 won't get anymore compatible software from 2020 or even before that and I love Windows 7. Although it's not as developed as it's successors, I still prefer it at this point.

All the previous OS's are way too old, incompatible and/or unstable/slow(Vista/XP).

If you were in my place which Windows OS would you prefer?

Windows 7. The user base on Win7 and 8.1 is far too large for companies to abandon developing and testing software on it. Now, if you’re willing to put up with some of Win10's nuisances, it is the only OS of the three I would upgrade to at this time. That being said, computers I’m reliant on being reliable I’m leaving on their respective OS’s (Win 7 & 8.1) as I’ve had far too many issues with Win10 on my Surface Pro 4. (Randomly uninstalling software during updates being the worst)

I hope compatible software will keep on being developed for Windows 7 after 2020 because I really love it and at this point in time I believe it is still the best OS by MS.

While it likely, you will run into problems with some games only supporting newer versions of DirectX, which are not supported in Windows 7.

However as with XP plan to move off Windows 7 before end of support for security reasons. Who knows what Windows 10 or whatever is next will look like then.

Then I'll milk the hell out of Windows 7 while I still can. Unfortunately I don't see Windows 10 getting this good in the foreseeable future. I'm guessing Windows 10 will only get as stable and compatible as Windows 7 in at least a couple of years.
