Dedicated sound cards will always be better than the motherboard onboard sound (Unless in the future they improve). It is up to you if you think getting a sound card is worth it. It is how much you care about audio quality and features.

That is what I thought but I thought maybe because it was optical it might be different.

There will be no difference if you are using digital output.

ok figured everything out. connected a hdmi to my video card to my receiver and I can tell the difference already.
