Hi everyone,

So I got an imac from work after we upgraded all of the computers. Its a mid 2008 imac, it was running os x Leopard 10.5.8 prior. Apparently they used DBAN on it to wipe out private/sensitive information. I tried burning a .dmg file for leopard 10.5 installation on my pc laptop. In the imac it starts to load, i see the gray apple logo, then it turns to the prohibitory sign soon after. I tried hooking up an ethernet cable and doing a cmd+r start up for internet recovery and nothing works I think the 2008 model isn't recent enough for that? I have read that since I made the install disk on a pc (or even if you make it on a different model imac?) that it might not work on this model imac? Do i have to get another mid 2008 imac to burn the .dmg file in disk utility? Super confused. I'm a pc guy normally so im trying my best to understand mac talk, any help would be awesome thanks!

Command R will not work on that model, it is not modern enough.
If you can get access to another Mac (iMac or MacBook will do) running Leopard 10.5.X then you can clone it to an external drive, boot the iMac from the external drive and then clone to the iMac hard drive. I use SuperDuper for this. Then you can create a new user and login to that and delete the old user account along with their files so you have an almost factory install.
Other than that you need either the original recovery disks or you need a retail disk of 10.5.X (check Amazon and eBay).

I think there are ways to create a disk from a PC but I have found that to be hit or miss so can't really help with that.
