Hello!
Looking for a little help on an upcoming workstation build I'm putting together for 3D animation/rendering (mostly GPU based with Octane render), and visual FX work.

I'm having trouble figuring out a case that I would be able to house 4x 980TI Hybrid GPU's (with the AIO cooler), as well as a CPU AIO cooler. I'm looking for suggestions on a big case that'll have room for all the radiators & how to optimize airflow. The main challenge is the hose length of the GPU coolers which are only 14-15", and probably less once installed and directed where they need to go.

Here's my list so far for my build:
Motherboard: Asus X99-E WS
CPU: Leaning toward i7 6900k. May try and save some $$ and go for the 5930k or newer 6850x, though the 6950x 10 core is definitely tempting. :)
CPU cooler: Corsair H100i
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
GPU: 4x 980ti Hybrid
Storage: 500GB 850evo (possibly m.2 950pro 512 if I could fit it with 4x GPUs?)
Western Digital Black 6TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Power: EVGA SuperNOVA 1600w
Case: Open to Suggestions! So far I've been looking into the Thermaltake x9 which seems like it might work... I originally was thinking of getting the Corsair 900D since it's so huge, BUT it looks like the hoses for the GPU radiators wont reach the front or top of the case.

I'm really not experienced with building PC's, so I'm trying to avoid doing a full on custom water loop if I can. Plus, I've seen the 980ti's with the hybrid cooling kit going for $549 which is pretty much the same price as most of the air cooled cards, so it seems like a good bang for the buck if I can fit all the radiators.

I saw this build which is pretty close to what I want to do, but they removed most of the drive cages in the front to make room for the radiators leaving them using only SSD's which isn't ideal...

Would love if you guys could help me out with some suggestions, and a general look over the list to point out any possible compatibility issues. Budgets coming in a little under ~5k, but this is going to be my main workstation for remote freelance work, so I just want something reliable and fast.

Should be a beast once I figure out how to make it all work!

Thanks everyone!!

For RAM, any 2400MHz+ DDR4 will do. I'd recommend Kingston or G.Skill. As for watercooling, there is a really good Youtuber called Jayztwocentz. This video is a bit old but still applies.

The custom loop would be an investment, but it's really up to you on how much you want to spend. If you are doing 4 cards at that price point though, the hybrids may be a more feasible option. Having said that, I have no idea how SLI scaling works with rendering, but two 1080s may be worth taking a look at.

Honestly it's not worth the hassle to have 5 AIO coolers installed. As much as you might save in buying the 4 980Ti Hybrids, you'll have to spend a lot to find a case that will support all of those single rads. I'd honestly just save up a little extra and get a custom loop. If you really must use the hybrids though, I'd buy the case that they were using and just find a way to ghetto mod it. Either that, or you could check out the Phanteks Enthoo Primo. Also, you can save a lot of money by not buying Dominator Platinum. It's massively overpriced.

Thank for the reply! I may just have to man up and start learning about some custom loops. I honestly have no idea what's involved or how difficult they are to build. Have any idea how much $$ we'd be talking for a 4x + CPU custom water setup?

As far as RAM. Do you have a suggestion of what I should look at?

Really appreciate the help. I'm pretty much in the dark on most of this stuff and learning as I go :)

Awesome, thanks for those links! Definitely going to look into a custom loop. I think you're right though, the price for the hybrids is pretty good, compared to dropping another $600-1k on cooling that would give me similar performance. Not to mention the added challenge and user error potential on my end...

I think I can get everything into a Thermaltake X9 case. It's not the prettiest case, but whatever works. Gotta go through all the measurements, but it looks like I'd be able to easily mount most the radiators to the roof, maybe one on the rear??

The 1080's look promising, but aren't supported yet for the software I'm using(hopefully by august, but depends on Nvidia and final build of CUDA 8.0). As of now though the 980ti actually performs as well as the Titan X, which is interesting. So I'm waiting to see if all the hype of the 1080's will apply to rendering...

Thanks again! Gonna go watch those youtube vids and nerd out.

now you cant use the hybrids cooler on a custom loop then water blocks for 900 cards aint easy to come by if not reference pcb [$$]

my be best [not to say better] to see what cards in the 10 series come out with a factory block likr the evga hydrocooper as example that's made for the custom loop

4 way 980 hydro pics here to look at for more example
