Overheating AMD FX-6300 CPU

Hello there

Lately I've started having issues with the temperature of my PC, especially that of my AMD FX-6300 CPU. When I built my computer 2 years ago I used the stock CPU cooler and it got really hot when playing games like BF4, and started overheating. So I bought a CPU cooler after 2 months,a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. Now the temperature is a bit lower, but after a few good hours of The Witcher 3 it still overheats every once in a while. I've tried speeding up my GPU fans, but can't manage to do the same thing with the Cooler Master fan. Any ideas of how to fix this?

Specs:
CPU: AMD FX-6300
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: ASRock 980DE3/U3S3
RAM: 8GB DDR3 Crucial
GPU: MSI R9 280 3GB
PSU: Seasonic S12II-620 Bronze
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB
Case: Aerocool GT White edition
Windows 10 x64

Solution

That's thermal shutdown the cpu will shut the computer down if it gets too hot to save itself. You can damage the cpu at those temps, AMD recommends package temp not exceed 62c. Im assuming the cpu cooler was mounted incorrectly. Like robcrezz said remount the cooler and reapply the thermal paste.
Hi there

Straight of the bat that CPU is old and actually rather weak compared to what Intel have. Amd has fell behind in the CPU market as they haven't released any new CPU's yet unlike Intels Skylake range.

Your CPU can not handle the Witcher 3 whatsoever, you need an i7 to run Witcher 3.

My Specs
CPU: Intel Devils Canyon i7 4790K 4.0GHZ (Boost 4.4GHZ)
MOBO: ASRock Z97 Anniversary (Socket 1150)
GPU: MSI GTX 970 4GB OC Edition
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz 4x4GB Dual Channel 16GB kit
PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 550W 80 Plus Gold
SDD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
HDD: 1TB Western Caviar Digital
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

I can run it on ultra with some settings on high (ie shadows) at vysnced 60fps 1080p with no issues.
My system wipes the floor with any game, it will be even more powerful when I stick an MSI GTX 1080 8GB in at some point.

Get an Intel system then get a more powerful graphics card such as the R9 380/90.

Lol are you serious "your cpu cant handle witcher 3 whatsoever"? How weak do you think that cpu is? It may not be as powerful as the latest and greatest intel cpus but it can certainly play witcher 3, I played through the whole game with a fx 6350 and a 760.

Here it is handling witcher 3 may not be as good as intel but it can certainly play the game: http://www.techspot.com/review/1006-the-witcher-3-benchmarks/page5.html

What are your temps? The 212 evo should be more than capable of keeping that cpu cool at stock clocks.

No need to disown AMD CPU's like that!

I have a fx 8320 which is perfectly fine.

You don't need a i7 just to play witcher 3? you say it like he is restricted to only buy a i7 to play it

So the question is you say it's over heating how hot is it getting ? and how do you know it's over heating does your PC shutdown or do you have a warning in your BIOS that is telling you ? AMD CPU tend to run hot which is ok.

You dont need a water cooler to cool a 6300 at stock clocks, the 212 evo should be more than enough. A change to quality thermal paste wont do much either unless the OP used way too much or way too little paste when installing the cooler in the first place. The paste they give you with the 212 evo is good enough.

I'm sorry, plain stupid of me not to include temperatures, this is as high as I can measure them with HWMonitor

My PC just suddenly shuts down, get a cringe when that happens, I know it's really bad for my computer. It's happened a dozen times or so now

Well the FX-6300 seemed like a good, not too expensive option to run demanding games, especially at the time. I guess it gets old, but really the only problem is that it gets so hot. It's not like I'm having performance issues, especially not with my R9 280 which runs TW3 on ultra settings with a few things turned down like Nvidia hairworks at a steady 50 fps, so I don't plan on buying another one anytime soon.

Yeah that was my thought too... I applied the paste as instructed, nothing out of the ordinary when installing the fan, but I may try higher quality paste if all else fails and see how it goes.

Thank you, yes I guess that's what I'll do then, remount it. Although I'm nearly certain that I did install the fan correctly, the mounting went very smooth, same thing for the paste... Any recommendations for new thermal paste?

I would just use the the paste that came with the 212 evo, I can all but guarantee the quality of the thermal paste is not causing those temps. I like arctic MX-4 and noctua NT-H1 but like I said that wont solve your issue. The only way your going to see temps like that is if the cooler was on wrong, were you careful to tighten the screws in a cross formation to make sure equal pressure is applied to the cpu? The only other thing I can think of that would cause those temps is not nearly enough thermal paste or maybe if you have no case airflow at all and your in a very warm room but even then those temps are VERY hot for a 212 evo on a 6300 at stock clocks.

Well I did more than enough cable management, there is enough room for air flow in the case and the room isn't hot at all, so I must have done something wrong myself then. Thanks again for helping out
