Welcome to the community, MrCDB1!

I'm sorry to hear about your connectivity issues with the WD Elements desktop drive! :( I'd advise you to try using an identical power supply (AC adapter) and see if that will help you power on the external HDD. I'd strongly recommend you check if the HDD powers up if you use a different USB cable to connect it to a computer, as well. Hopefully, you will be able to get it recognized and have the chance to backup all your files.
I'd definitely not advise you to take it out of the original enclosure as it would void the warranty on the product. Check the WD Elements' warranty here.

Possible the enclosure or power supply went bad. You can open it up, remove the actual hard drive out of it and try it in another enclosure. You may need to get another drive of the same model in order for this to work as some of them only work with the same enclosure. But worth it if the data is what you need to get to. Enclosures are cheap so I would go to your local computer store and grab one. You just need a 3.5" SATA enclosure.
