I'm sorry to hear about your connectivity issues with the WD Elements desktop drive!
I'd advise you to try using an identical power supply (AC adapter) and see if that will help you power on the external HDD. I'd strongly recommend you check if the HDD powers up if you use a different USB cable to connect it to a computer, as well. Hopefully, you will be able to get it recognized and have the chance to backup all your files.
I'd definitely not advise you to take it out of the original enclosure as it would void the warranty on the product. Check
the WD Elements' warranty here.
