Ok well I want to upgrade my PC one day. I am running a Dell Studio XPS 8100 which apparently reached over $1,000 which is insane when it came with the processor in the title and a GT 520. I upgraded the GPU to a gtx960 and plan to re use it when I build a new computer. However, the Intel i5 650 has a LGA1156 socket and there really aren't any motherboards that support this. Most intel-compatible motherboards run the 1151/1150 socket. I just want to know the specs since I might not be keeping this cpu for much longer. Like what is the generation and will something like a Intel i5 6600k which I believe is 3.20 ghz like the one I have beat it? I just want some info basically

Solution
Your board only supports first generation Core i series processors, they're all pretty old now as they released in 2009 and 2010. The i5 650 is a dual core with hyperthreading, it has more in common with Core i3s than current desktop i5s which are all quad core with no hyperthreading. Moving to a current Skylake CPU (6th generation) like the i5 6600k will yield about a 30 to 35% performance boost clock for clock, plus an additional improvement from higher clockspeeds than 3.2GHz on most processors, and the higher core count if you get an i5.

It's actually quite a bit more than 35% faster clock for clock. Not many benchmarks available in that comparison but here's some: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/144?vs=1544
Even the single threaded Cinebench workload has the 6600K almost twice as fast.

The i7 880 is the best CPU that would drop into that motherboard and it's still a long way behind: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/192?vs=1544

It's not really worth dropping any more money on that platform. Start saving for an upgrade.
