What happened to my heat sink?!

What's happened to my cpu heat sink? I was trying out some cool laboratory paste and when putting it on the cpu I had a horrible time applying it as it just bubble up and then there wasn't enough of it either. Half the syringe was rock hard!! Now I cleaned up and went to bed and came back and now my heat sink has melted away. It literally crumbles to the touch!!!

Looks like you used a mercury based compound on aluminum.
Mercury will break down aluminum ,like shown in your pics.

Looks like an old boxed AMD cpu cooler there.

Anyway, price up an aftermarket cooler for your FX based cpu, the plus side is as long as there is no damage to the cpu it`s self a bigger and better air cooler will keep the cpu temps much lower.

Thank you for your answer. I think this is the reason. I didn't realise that such things happen. I always believed since almost everything had a standard within the computer industry that such things wouldn't happen as they wouldn't purposely use chemicals which react with each other especially since aluminium sinks are stock items nowadays. Just had a look through the instructions. There wasn't any major warnings indicating this would happen. How annoying.
