Windows 10 or 8.1

Solution
Both 7 and 8 updates are moving towards a cumulative nature so you will either not update windows or get the telemetry stuff. And you can be sure they'll sneak them in somehow :)

Spybot Anti-Beacon does a pretty good job of stopping most if not all the telemetry. But if you really want to go above and beyond you ca keep an updated IP/Domain list banned in your router. Voila! :)

Whatever is cheaper at the moment. If you get 8.1, you can immediately upgrade to 10 for free (offer lasts until the end of July 2016).

If you don't want to go through that hassle, just get 10. Maybe the price difference is not worth it.

I just built mine two months ago (clean windows 10 install), and I was really hesitant on Windows 10. Last year there were many gamers complaining about driver issues and FPS drops. I went ahead with Windows 10 to avoid the whole nagging forced upgrade issue, and I will admit I like 10 much better than 8.1. Now that it's going on two years old, most of the issues are gone, and I haven't had a single problem with any of my games. The navigation and organization of Windows 10 is much better than 8.1, more like Windows 7 was. I'm happy to say I like Windows 10 much better.

10 and never look back. Don't believe all the crap online. It's a superior OS.

You're right. There have been so many complaints and media attention about the faults of Windows 10, but those same media outlets conveniently leave out any positive spin. Of course we're going to see all the negatives when that's all anyone talks about. The number of positive reviews far outweigh the negative feedback.

I use 10 it has been rock solid for me. I wouldn't recommend anything else for a gamer a lot of upcoming Microsoft published games will be win 10 exclusive and a lot of others will be using dx12 which will only be fully supported on win 10. I dont really care for all the telemetry baked into this OS Microsoft can farm a lot of data off you when using 10. Most of it is just so it can learn how to advertise to you, microsoft makes a lot of money farming data on people. How you feel about that is up to you.

It is widely and falsely presumed both that the telemetry stuff is exclusive to W10 and that it's difficult to circumvent. The same stuff has already been rolled out to both W8 and 7, and it's as easy as running a small program should one wish to circumvent it.

Regardless, I find complaints about that stuff misguided and puerile coming from anybody that owns a smartphone.

Not if you choose not to download those updates which added all the telemetry services to win 7 or 8 which win 7 and 8 allow you to do. A single app cannot block all the telemetry from windows 10, you need to manually delete windows services with command prompt which could have consequences. And even then people claim you cant stop all of it, apparently some of the telemetry services are baked into other windows services and if you delete those you will also be deleting files windows needs to function. I agree on the smartphone thing but its a slippery slope if everybody is all fine and dandy with what they have now then it may give microsoft or other companies the idea that they can get even more intrusive on peoples privacy and get away with it. I see no problem with windows 10 as it sits, but that may change if microsoft feels they can do whatever the hell they want and get away with it. That's my opinion anyway.
