What GPU do I buy now?

Hello everyone.

I got my i3-6100, Asus H110M-A, 8GB DDR4 upgrade recently and paired it up with my old HD6870 for the time being.

I was planning to upgrade to the RX470 but seeing the actual prices of the RX480 now (300+ euros where I live) I doubt it will be anywhere near the expected/promised $179 price here. :(

I'm basically looking for a GPU around the $170-180 price mark capable of running new games at 1680x1050 on med-high. I'm considering GTX950/960 2GB or R7 370 2/4GB now.

Thanks for help. :)

The problem you probably won't able to take advantage of the extra 2GB in the 960 unless you plan to to SLI, so I would suggest going for a 970 or RX 480.

Only bad thing about the 4GB RX480 though is the slower GDDR5 speeds. Yeah, it doesn't affect all -that- much, but still, it does make a difference.

Also - not sure where you were going to get a $179 RX480. MSRP for the 4GB RX480 was spec'd at $199 - although I'm sure some e-tailers are surcharging a stitch. I would still say the RX480 is a great deal - but there are some things I would wait for, namely the other manufacturers to release their aftermarket designs. The reference design is close to pulling somewhere around 90+ watts through the PCIe slot which is about 20% over spec. Not that I think that your board will fry or catch fire, but it could create some issues with some of the on board circuitry.

The aftermarket designs will hopefully solve that issue with a proper 8pin PEG connector instead of the reference design 6pin - plus they should run quite a bit cooler.

if it's between your choices that you listed, I'd do the gtx 960. I've always been a fan of nvidia. I tried holding off for the rx480 and maybe give amd another shot. But like my old amd graphics card that replaced my nvidia...a hot sad disappointment

Sorry, I didn't express myself right. RX480 8GB = $239, RX470 8GB = $179.. that's what I read. BUT RX480 sells for 300 euros here (about $330). So I doubt the RX470 will be sold for anything near $179 in Europe. :)

Here for $179 I can get right now the GTX950 2GB or if I pay $10-15 more the GTX960 2GB.

Well because it a new card the prices shot up I expect the prices to move down to MSRP in a month so once stock normalizes that being said difference countries still may have prices above the targeted MSRP. You should be able to game pretty good on GTX 950 if you can strench to GTX960 then do otherwise at 1080p and sub resolution it will be a lot better than 6870. I haven't seen the release date for the 470 though with the results of the 480 I except it to sit in the middle of the 960 and 970. Frankly probably would make more sense with the 4GB version than 8GB though won't know until reviewed.

That's a pretty decent card. I have two 960's in SLI myself and got them for about the same price. The RX480 is significantly faster though, and once prices drop down after the initial rush you should be able to:

Find a RX480 for a decent price

OR

Find a GTX 970 for a very good price since the RX480 is on-par with the GTX970 (and almost the 980).
