ASUS Strix GTX 970 performing way below expectations

I recently had to RMA my ASUS Strix GTX 970 with the manufacturer because one of the fans made a pretty awful rattling sound when above 40%.

After they had it a week for "repair" they sent me a replacement that I received today,.. and it performs way below expectations in benchmarks.

My old 970 http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/1245281

The replacement 970 http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/1303033

My old 970 overclocked could reach 96% on that benchmark, this one can only reach 88%. Unigen Heaven benchmark scores about 100 points less. I feel cheated, like something was stolen from me. Not only that, it did not come with any protective covering other than the anti-static bag and bubble wrap, not any covering on the PCIE pins or ports. The nice protective Styrofoam box it came in that said "ASUS in search of incredible", which is what I sent it back in (made sense to me) did not make it back. I lost quite a bit on an RMA. I never had to RMA a GPU before, but since it was so expensive I felt it necessary. I've owned other GPUs from retailers such as EVGA, Sapphire, and XFX and only had one fan go out after about 8 years.

Is this normal for manufacturers such as ASUS to replace a GPU with a lower performing GPU? Should I RMA again? This is highly unnerving and I don't believe I will ever buy anything from ASUS again. It's the third item I've owned from them and all three items have a defect. ( new 1080p monitor, the HDMI doesn't work and 1 dead pixel; CD/DVD drive sounds like it's grinding metal.)

That is a rubbish benchmark to test a card like a 970... It's testing it in DX9 and DX10 modes... for a DX11 / DX12 capable card?

You want to get a decent test, go onto steam -> tools -> 3D Mark Firestrike Demo and run that.

That will give you a proper test of how the card is performing vs similar models.

Good luck with trying to RMA a GPU because of a benchmark score(s). Asus is going to ask you what the specific defect(s) is/are with "operation" of the GPU is/are; i.e. physical defects, artifacting, fan issues, overheating, etc... You'd need to provide evidence/explain how, to the best of your knowledge (to launch an RMA) that one of these issues (or something other) is causing the low benchmark AND they may ask you if it's causing issues in other programs like games, graphics, etc. before approval.

Good luck on troubleshooting and with Asus, if it comes down to that/them.

That looks good to me.

Dunno why the DX9 result was so low but that appears to be performing normally in Firestrike. A lot faster than my old R9 280 :p
