My asus rt-ac66u router and ZyXEL modem are what I setup after changing ISP s. The modem was provided, and the router I bought. I set it up and everything was fine, until I get constant "resolving host..." message. I want to destroy my router, its been happening for months. Through my modem its OK, but wireless through router is unusable. How do I diagnose this... I've tried everything.

Clearing DNS cache on browser and flushing DNS from computer, router reboots and resets, but nothing was a permanent fix. I'm sure the router is to blame, but I cant go any further. If anyone needs more details I can provide them after they reply. I don't know what else to add. Thanks in advance.

Your router is having a problem getting the correct DNS settings from with the IP assignment from the ISPs DHCP or trouble passing them along to the local IPs.

You can fix the DNS settings on the router to Google's service. The IPs are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4.
That will at least give you an idea if the router is passing along the DNS numbers with the IP assignments, as it should, if the problem disappears.

It may be that the ISP is providing bad IP numbers, so a call to them to get the right ones. This would allow you to double check the assignments provided by their service. You could also use their DNS as the fixed numbers in the router too, if you prefer.

Hi and thanks for the reply, I was beginning to worry that no one know what to do.

Let me first apologize for the fact that only a bit of what you wrote was understandable to me. Can you further explain what you mean in your first sentence describing the problem? Also, what do you mean by "The ISP is providing bad IP numbers"? If this is the problem, does it fit my description of only affecting my browsing sometimes? A million thanks.

Things I've tried include tons of troubleshooting chrome and computer, even though its the routers fault. rebooting, restarting, factory resetting router. Changing router DNS to googles public DNS. Power cycling modem. calling ISP, who asked me to plug my computer into the modem to confirm the problem wasn't on their side of things. I'm completely lost.. Is it my router LAN or WAN settings? Is it that my modem and router have conflicting settings? Where do I go from here?

EDIT: It happened again! I've copy pasted the error chrome gives me if that helps anyone:
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN
Thanks!

'That is more helpful. Look at this page, it will tell you how to change your DNS settings to google. This should resolve the issue without undue toil in examinations of networking jargon.

so lets say I want to use my router as the DNS server with my ISPs DNS servers being in the background, this is how my colleagues have set theirs up. I dont want to mix in googles DNS. I want to figure out whats wrong with this god awful router. i'm ready to replace it right this second.
