Motherboard only detects RAM sometimes

I just got all new components (except PSU and GPU) to upgrade my comp. Sometimes, the system will boot up without a fuss when one stick is in, other times the system won't boot up and the DRAM troubleshooting light on the mobo is solid while the CPU light flashes sometimes. The system has never booted up with two sticks of ram on.

Is the RAM at fault or the motherboard? The system has successfully booted both inside and outside of the case.
Also, I know it's semi-common, but my processor did make a harsh noise when I pressed the lever down to insert it into the mobo.

Specs:
Motherboard: MSI B150 Gaming M3
CPU: Intel i3 6100
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW
RAM: Kingston HyperX (2133) (2 sticks of 4gb)
Storage: PNY 240GB SSD
OS: Windows 10 Home (unlicensed)

Update: After installing my motherboard's drivers, I have gotten my computer to boot consistently using only one of the sticks of RAM. Whenever I use the other stick, regardless of if I use it on its own or if I use it paired with the working stick, my computer won't boot at all and I still get the same flashing troubleshooting lights. Wouldn't the system still boot if it was just a dead stick?
