Hi,

I was using a EVGA GTX 970 4GB until last month when it started giving me problems. So I send it back and waited for the release of Nvidia's Geforce GTX 1070 and AMD's Rx 480.

Currently, I use my system for programming, video editing for youtube, basic Photoshop work, moderate gaming etc. (My current setup is i7-5820, 16GB RAM, dual 1440p monitors)

Now since both 1070 and 480 are released, I am in a dilema regarding which card to buy. Since my budget is $350. I was hoping to buy the GTX 1070 at $379, but that doesn't look realistic due to price gouging happening currently.

My confusion is that,
1. will either of these cards would last for 3-4 years with my current configuration and use?
2. will the Rx 480 be able to enough to push 1440p display for 2 monitors?
3. or should i just increase my budget to get 1070?
4. how much GPU RAM is needed for dual 1440p monitor scenario?

What do you guys think?

Regards
Tarun

Solution
An RX 480 should have no trouble with gaming on a single monitor and running desktop tasks on another, assuming those tasks aren't GPU-intensive, such as Bitcoin mining.
The RX 480 is a 1080p 144hz or 1440p 60hz card, at least from a gaming perspective. It'll easily run two 1440p monitors for basic desktop tasks, but not for gaming.

How long a card will last depends on how happy you are to lower the graphical settings and frame rate when the card's performance starts to weaken.

VRAM usage is entirely dependent on the game.

I render the game only on one monitor, and the other I use for recording and other stuff.

Somehow, the GTX 970 used to black out and then come back again in the above use case.

I am wondering if Rx 480 is something that could take the load of two 1440p monitors, or should i go with GTX 1070.

I have my hands on an RX480 right now, and while it can currently do 1440p on mediumish settings at around 60hz, its more a 1080p card. it struggles with 1440p on the current games, as games get better I fear it will lag behind. The possible exception is ofcourse DX12. if money is no object, the 1070 is the better option for 1440p, but if your strapped for cash, the RX480 may be worth risking it with the assumption that its better DX12 support will help it stay relevant longer in newer games. Or you can just wait for vega if you really want to go Red camp and not risk it. If you had asked about 1080p I would say RX480 all the way though.
