Hello,

I currently have 6gb of RAM installed on my machine (3 x 2gb) and wanted to upgrade to 16gb. The store recommended 2x Corsair 8GB DDR3 Memory (CMV8GX3M1A1600C11)

So I installed one 8gb chip after removing the other 3 chips to test before installing the other. As the title suggests my PC would start to the boot screen then shutdown in an endless loop. Could anyone advise if I have compatibility issues or am I missing something.

PC Specs

Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Intel Core i5 650 @ 3.20
6gb Dual-channel DDR 3 @ 664MHz (9-9-9-24) (Current 3x2gb setup)

Motherboard

Manufacturer MSI
Model IONA (CPU 1)
Version 1.0
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge
Chipset Revision 12
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model H57
Southbridge Revision 06

BIOS - American Megatrends Inc. version 5.11

Thanks in advance.

can you provide your pc model number. all I can get is that MSI iona has several different motherboard numbers all made for hp. off hand though it looks like you need to tell them they sold you the wrong memory because all the info I see on the different boards it needs to run at 1333 MHz which is your old memory speed also. these motherboards are limited so chance are you cannot do anything to make the ram work.

My PC is a HP Pavilion 6320uk.

According to motherboard's specs on the HP website:
Memory upgrade info:

-Supports DDR3 DIMM's only
-Dual channel memory architecture
-four DDR3 DIMM (120-pin) sockets
-DIMM types:
- PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
- PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
-non-ECC memory only,unbuffered
-Supports upto 16 GB on 64-bit PC's
-Maximum memory only if using 4GB DDR3 DIMM modules.

After reading that I phoned the store and a lady who builds pc's stated that it was the wrong memory and she advised Corsair Memory — 4GB DDR3 Memory (CMV4GX3M1A1600C11)

http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/corsair-memory-4gb-ddr3-memory-cmv4gx3m1a1600c11

I exchanged the memory for the above. As I only have 2x4gb (waiting for the other 2 tomorrow) I removed my current 3x2gb memory and inserted the 2x4gb.

I no longer have the rebooting loop issue but when I power on the power remains on but I get no signal on my monitor, Its as if the monitor signal cuts on and off.

Do you think it could be the 1600MHz thats the problem ?

Could try resetting the CMOS then install but don't have your hopes up, you've got a 1156 mobo which ws designed for DRAM with low density memory ICs (chips) these sticks have high density chips, also 1156 takes up to 4GB sticks, so that was probably the problem with the 8GB sticks. Also you bought 2x4GB and getting another set of 2x4GB - if wanting 16GB should get a set of 4x4GB, there's no guarantees when mixing sets of DRAM - even of the same identical model - look at Fiction items 2 and 6 here:

Might pass it the the folks at the store you went to also ;) Doesn't sound like they know DRAM

Clearly the store has no idea what there talking about, I'll send them a copy.

I tired resetting the CMOS but same as above, PC remained switched on but recieved the no signal cutting on and off on the monitor again.

Could you advise on any ram that would be compatible for my system as I would like to get it up to 16gb without having to go through trying the entire selection at the store ;)
