Hi there. I hope you won't mind giving me some advice, or at least confirmation.

I have a very old mid-range desktop, which I've upgraded piece-meal over the last 6 years. I play a lot of games, but not high-demand ones (for e.g. mostly single-player rpg fps and mmos, but no CoD or similar) and certainly at the moment, next gen has been out of the question.

I'm on a tight budget, and while I'd LOVE to buy shiny new machine, it's just not possible at the moment. I've been watching my poor PC become more and more outclassed and dread the day it finally can't do anything I'd like it to.

However, the reviews of the RX 480 have given me a glimmer of hope that I might be able to squeeze a bit more life out my machine. I'm reasonably tech savvy, but really don't want to make a mistake, so I've come here to clarify and make sure the card would be a suitable upgrade.

PC Specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte EP43-DS3
Processor: Intel Quad Core Q9550 2.83GHz
Memory: 8192MB
PSU: 650w
Card: Radeon 6800
OS: Windows 10

So, as far as I can tell the RX 480 would be fine in terms of specs, but I just want to make sure I'm not going to make a false economy in thinking it will extend the life of my PC?

Edit: - I also meant to add that the various reviews I've read seem to indicate the RX 480 will have some 'legs' in terms of staying viable for a while. I thought if it would work for me in my old machine, I could build a new PC myself, with the card as the first piece of the puzzle. Would it's potential longevity be a fair assessment and would it be a good place to being a new machine?

Any advice very gratefully received!

P.S. Please don't be too unkind about my machine. It's old creaky and not very good, but has served me very well, and I've had fun with the 'mechano' of upgrading.

This is a GPU-side thing, since your BIOS doesn't support UEFI, you have to look for a GPU that boots using LEGACY ROM.

Thank you so much for replying. This is exactly the kind of thing I thought I might forget, and so very useful!

I've done a quick search but finding out if the BIOS version and the RX 480 are compatible doesn't seem an obvious thing. Is there an easy-ish way of finding out?

Postscript

Have just installed brand spanky new RX 480. It's amazing. Even alpha 'Ark: Survival Evolved' is now running smooth as butter (admittedly on low mem settings but yesterday it was virtually unplayable because of stuttering.)

Extremely happy!!

Now to try some other games!!
