Hello,

This is a two part question. So my first issue is, I just started video editing. I built a PC for gaming but i want to upgrade it for video editing/motion graphic and gaming also, so a hybrid build. Right now I edit videos on my macbook Air with iMovie and it sucks. "What would be a good upgrade that can fix my need to edit videos better?"

This is my computer Specs:

CPU: i5 4460

GPU: AMD Radeon r9 280

RAM: 16gb Team Elite

Motherboard: Asrock z97m pro4

HDD: 240gb +1tb Seagate

SSD: Kingston 128gb

Mouse: SteelSeries rival 300

Keyboard: Old Dell Keyboard from 2003

Monitor: Old Dell Monitor (20.1" 16:10)

Second part is what video editor would be a good replacement for iMovie? I've done some research and i am seeking more advice on what to get. Adobe Premier would be a great choice other than the cost to use it and it is a monthly/yearly purchase, not a one time fee.

I have looked at free option like shotcut and lightworks, Both seem great. I also wanted to know if it is worth it to go towards a $10 to $30 option or just fork out the cash and get the super expensive stuff that cost $300 to $1000+.

Unfortunately, I do not wish to spend a whole bunch of money. I am looking for decent hardware/software for a little video editing and also still be able to game a little

The only feature I desire in the Video Editor is to edit Audio (like remove background noise)

Thank you very much! and i hope i posted this in the right section. :)

You have a good pc. I don't think it is really necessary for you to upgrade. You just started video editing. When you become experienced you will notice if you need to upgrade or not.

If you want to shell out cash, i would suggest getting 6800K + X99 motherboard + 16GB DDR4 rams. It is not going to be cheap beware. If you get the i7 6700K, it will not be a big upgrade to justify the cost imo.

By the way, i always edit audio separately then import it into video editing software. Audacity is a great audio editor, and its free. Many big youtubers also use audacity.

Thank you for the quick response! I was looking at the i7 5820k in the past as an upgrade, is the 6800k worth the cost to get instead?

Ill give Audacity a try!

Also and recommendation on video editing software? I was thinking about getting Filmora, I just got a 50% discount for it for $25 or is there an better option around that price point?

Nearly everyone uses Premiere Pro on PC. You can get it in monthly subscription. You can get old premiere pro which is a one time purchase (CS6) and costs $1000+.

Lightworks is also good, it is free. Quite similar to premiere. I would suggest trying it out first instead of buying cheap video editors. Lightworks is surprisingly robust. When you become experienced and you feel the need for features that you get with paid software, buy one then.

Edit: I feel that 6800K is worth it to get. Is is supposed to be 10-15% faster than 5820K. Also the price difference is not much between them. But it is out of budget, 5820K is also a solid choice.

I would consider something like this. A faster CPU and a dedicated SSD for scratch and storage of current video projects. You could probably benefit from an upgraded GPU too. I would wait for more reviews on the RX 480 and see how it does with video editing. I can't help you with the software.

I think getting a new SSD for just video Editing would be great. But i don't think I'll get another 4 core cpu, if i am gonna upgrade, I will get as good as i can get. I'll just save a little longer.

As for the gpu, i was thinking about getting the new rx480 but i think my money would be better spent on future upgrades like cpu, ssd, and a x99 MB. Ill do a slow upgrade and buy the small things untill i get a pro grade video editor.

I thought that he didn't want to spend a lot of money. No doubt a 6 core 5830 or 6850 will be better, but for a smaller investment, the 4790K will provide a noticeable pop in performance:

The 4460 is not on the following charts, only the higher performing i5 4670K compared to the i7 4790K:

yeah you are right, i do not want to spend a lot of money, 6800k is a lot and i won't be able to buy it now or for a while, which will give me some time to save for a big purchase. I personally dont want to pay 1k for purely just video editing stuff since I would like too game on the same computer.

My price point before i get new monitors would be around $600-$800 in upgrades. But if its worth the 200 more i might have to fork it out :/

btw, all your answers are very helpful, i wish i could of put it as all you answered my question. :)

Edit: my original solution was to get a new gpu and that would solve everything, but the deeper i go into this topic, the money money it looks like i will have to spend :(

I would estimate based on available testing that you will get about a 25% improvement in speeds going from the 4660 to the 4790K, a bit more if overclocked. Going from the 4660 to the 5820 will probably result in about a 40% improvement, while from the 4660 to an overclocked 5820 maybe 55% improvement. You can see here on the Cinebench multithreaded and the Adobe Media Encoder that there is not a world of difference between the 4790K and the 5820K.

The GPU is the wild card. Normally I would suggest the GTX 970, but if the RX 480 proves to be good at encoding, it will be a less expensive option.

wow, that is a great answer!!! This help my Decision a lot! 4790k would be a better choice since I am not doing Pro Grade Video editing/Motion graphic stuff. Also it would be a good medium between gaming and work.
