Why is it not showing gigabit connection?

Good morning all.

I am going to do some streaming in my house. Good by DVDs. I bought an old Poweredge and copyied all my media to it, to stream to a few rokus and ps4s, and PCs. I hardwired my whole house with Cat6 (16 Runs) to all the rooms, living rooms and garage, etc. I bought a Switch(NETGEAR ProSAFE GS116NA 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (GS116NA)) Hooked everything up and it works, but I am not showing 1000 Mbps only showing 100 Mbps..

I know I will not get those speeds but why is it not saying 1000, any ideas?
Oh yeah all the NIC on the network(PCs) are gigabit NICs. hell the server has Dual Gigabit NICS.

I thank you in advance.

Solution
Are all your meter runs around the house withing 100 meter length.
If none of the connections from client machines is reaching 1000 Mbps and you have checked the status of each client connected to the 16 port switch do not show both Led lights lit solid for a 1000 Mbps link.

You should examine or check the cable from the server it`s self to the switch.
Making sure it is cat 5E or cat 6, or try replacing it.

Auto detection does not always work for network speed negotiation.
so it may involve setting the adaptor settings of each machine, including the hosting machine or server if the case.
To a manual setting each of 1000 Mbps speeds.

If the settings for any of the lan adaptors has an auto then you should manually do this.

It...
none are showing gig? the only time you wont be seeing gig is either the nic doesnt support it which isn't the case, the switch isn't gig or there is an issue on the port or the wiring is damaged or extremely high EMI. Start by pair testing the patch cables then the runs.

if all aren't showing gig it is most likely the switch.

It will only take one client set to auto to set the whole speed negotiation to 100 Mbps as it always defaults to the lowest speed, adaptor speed reported to the switch.

There for you have to manually change the settings of each adaptor on a client machine for the speed and duplex settings.

1000 Mbps Full Duplex.

Adaptors left on an Auto setting can often be a pain in the ass unless you set the fixed speed in the settings for each client.

You need to check that the rokus and the ps4 Ethernet ports on the devices are capable of 1000 Mbps.

As again they will force the rest of the network via the switch to operate at 100 Mbps.

Just check all the adaptors are manually set to 1000 over auto detect.
And the rokus, ps4 Ethernet are 1000 capable or it will drag the speed down to 100 Mbps across all of the network.

I'm pretty certain these un managed switches if something is running at 100 and say your pc is at 1000 it wont automatically cause the whole switch to turn into a fast ethernet switch. they should negotiate accordingly, almost everything should do auto negotiation just fine. rokus are only 100 mbps as well.

If what you say is true, the rokus must be dragging my speed down. all my runs are 100 ft or less. I did my home work on that end. My connections behind the wall plate could be an issue. It was my first time using a punch down tool, but I don't think all of them are bad..I will mess with it over the long weekend, and let you all know what I have found... Pair testing.,.,. if they where bad wouldn't they not work? (the cables)

I am sorry I don't understand, I do think the switch is unmanaged. Are you saying that if the Rokus are on the network it will slow down the whole network?? My "status" when i check my connection on my PC says 100mbit. I know it is capable of gigabit speeds. The Switch is a gigabit switch. ( I put the model # in the original post) hoped I explained well enough.

the switch you have is unmanaged as it has no cli or web interface for more advanced features.

we use the smaller 5 port switches like the one you have and I know when I hook a 100 poe brick into it for a wireless ap my pc still operates at gig.

are you sure that adapter is indeed gig and not an older dual nic 100?

whats the model of the nic in there?

ps4 is only 100 as well. most dvd players etc are only 100. many basic devices are still only 100
