I have a really old computer; maybe 8 years old? How do I know if the reader in it is a SD or a SDHC reader?

I have put a 4gb SDHC card in and can write and read 4gb to it. Does that say with certainty that it is a SDHC reader?

The reason I ask... I bought a 8gb SDHC card with maps on it for my Mazda GPS system. It worked fine, but when I went to copy it (with the Mazda software for copying/updating) it ruined the card. The dealer told me that he thinks that trying to copy it with less than 80 miles trashed the card; something to prevent people from selling copies, after 80 miles it is locked to the car it ran in. He gave me my money back, and I bought another.
HOWEVER people have copied their card successfully with only 5 miles, so I am not convinced that is the right explanation.
I am concerned that my reader is not a SDHC and maybe that is what trashed the card.
So... how do I know if I have a SD or a SDHC reader?
