i5-4690K vs. any i7-Skylake: How significant a difference is there?

In terms of 60+ 1440P gaming (GPU excluded from the calculation - think 970/1070). I've got that i5-model already :)

Minimal. The i7 may throw you a couple FPS through faster single cores, but the 4690K is good enough for any GPU these days at any resolution.

Its not worth upgrading if all you care about is game performance.

The i7 tends to get slightly higher minimum frame rates. The i5 tends to get slightly higher maximum frame rates. In most games it really doesn't matter. At 1440p with max settings you will be almost 100% GPU bound anyway so get the best graphics card over the best CPU.
