will a samsung evo 850 ssd work in a 2009 hp dv7-3080US?

Solution
Geez! I'm a day late.

The general consensus is that a SATA 3 ssd is backward compatible with a SATA 1 motherboard. It should work, providing certain conditions are met. SSD performance will be restricted to SATA 1 levels but it should still be a noticeable improvement compared to a hard disk drive.

Here is a link to an installation guide which might prove useful:

I have some bad news for you. Your 7 year old laptop does not support modern 3rd generation solid state drives.

According to the hp technical specs for your laptop, the drive interface is Serial ATA-150 (SATA 1.5). It is a very old SATA standard that is no longer in use. It was replaced by SATA 2 which in turn was replaced by SATA 3. Eventually SATA 3 ssd's will be replaced by the M.2 PCIe ssd's.

I should mention that modern SATA 3 6Gb/s ssd's are backward compatible all the way back to the original SATA 1 standard. Theoretically you could plug in the ssd and it might work but performance will be severely restricted to the point where it is not worth the cost. In addition you would need to update the motherboard's system BIOS. Unfortunately HP has ended support for the motherboard in your laptop.

Thanks JohnnyLucky for the quick reply. I didn't think installing a new SATA3 ssd would work like it would in a modern computer, I was just wondering if it would be much of an improvement over my dying hdd. I wasn't sure if it would work at all. That said, is there any benefit to an ssd in this case?

Thanks JohnnyLucky. Please don't apologize for being 1 day late. Your are doing me a favor, not the other way around. I am a rookie at this and value the experience you are lending me. I am going to try an ssd which I bought for my sons computer, if it works okay I will let you know. Thanks again. Bob.
