I've searched and have not been able to find a problem like mine just yet. I'm having very odd performance. For example, i can play alien isolation at max settings perfectly, but wolfenstein new order, I get 30 fps on lowest settings with fighting scene lag spikes down to 7 fps. Farcry 4 I can play OK, not great----about 35 fps----on ultra settings (which is what geforce experience optimized the game at) until i fire a gun (even standing alone, just shooting a couple shots at nothing) and then my fps goes instantly to about 5. I loaded up the 2013 Tomb Raider and it runs just fine at max everything. I have no clue why this is happening, but I am quite certain i should be able to run wolfenstein and farcry on higher than the lowest possible settings.

Playing Wolfenstein on lowest settings, during the 7fps lag spikes:
GPU temp ~ 60
GPU usage ~ 15%

CPU temp ~ 40
CPU usage ~ 40%

Farcry 4 Stats are very similar to wolfenstein's

PC stats below:

MOBO - MSI z97 PC Mate ATX

GPU - MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G 4GB GDDR5

CPU - Intel Core i7-4770k

PSU - Corsair HX850

HD - Toshiba 1TB

SSD - Samsung 128GB

RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz

Sorry, I am not super knowledgeable on PC stuff, but i do have a small database. I'm not a hardcore gamer, i just play when i can, but want the pc to work properly when i do.

If anyone has any advice, please don't be shy. I can get more info if you need

That is truly wierd.
Your system should run any game with decent FPS at 1080p.
So there 2 options:
Faulty software
Faulty HW
well ... 3 ... both are faulty.
Let's try to find the reason.
Any chance you have a windows 10 installation on other computer (bringing one from a friend will also work).
If yes, just disconnect your SSD and connect that one, update/install drivers if necessary and play the games.
windows 10 was chosen since it will boot without issues on other computer (with previous versions it's more complicated). It will cry that it lost activation an has to be activated - don't worry. The activation status will return once you put the disk back to the original machine.
P.S.
You can also install windows on some other HDD if...

Try completely reinstalling the drivers? What resolution are you running at.

I will try reinstalling them. Running at 1080p currently

UPDATE: I completely uninstalled and then installed the current driver for my card. Launched Wolfenstein after that and nothing at all had changed. :(

Good news. So i put a friends SSD with Windows 10 on my pc. Installed the drivers and played both farcry 4 and wolfenstein. Both games never dropped below 55 FPS on ultra settings, even in a hailstorm of artillery and human flesh. I was running about 75 FPS on farcry during the fiery brimstone bloodbath of Banapur.

So it seems the problem is either my SSD or my OS.

How can i tell if the Windows 10 install i have is faulty? And could i fresh install it on a different SSD to find out? Thanks so much for the help so far, and anymore you might offer!

Well ...
You can make a bootable usb flash drive with windows install (head to MS site for how to) from your windows.
Than just plug a new disk and install the windows.
If you don't have another SSD, you can start with resetting the windows (head again to MS site for how to, will be close to the first how to).
There are two options:
1. keep your files and programs, I'd start with this one even before installing on new SSD.
2. complete wipe of system partition - very similar to reinstalling the windows.

P.S.
There are utilities that allow you to check the SSD health. your manufacturer should have one ;)

Well officer.....we have had a dooooozy of a day....

But for real, this has been a fun ride. Or taxing rather. So i DL samsung magician. It showed SSD in good health and running at decent speeds. Check. So i went to microsoft and talked with people there for an hour and a half. Ran a system scan through comman prompt and found nothing. Scanned again, found nothing. Lagging still persisted. Check. Talked again to microsoft people for 2 hours and got the windows 10 DL tool. tried your first option with the ISO and kept all my files except it replaced my old OS. After lots of 'OKs" and waiting, i tried the games....to no avail. So not the fix. Check. Now i am working on downloading it and booting from a flash drive, from which i will install windows on my HDD instead.

Well i wish it were as easy as it appeared at first. Trouble on the dance floor once again. Upon booting from the Flash drive, and attempting to install windows on my HDD which has 400 some odd Gigs left, i get the error code talking about how i have MBR and windows will only install on a GPT partition. so now im trying to troubleshoot and deal with that. Its just madness....I keep having to find a solution to a secondary problem that is only keeping me from solving the initial problem. grr. frustrating i tell yee

Great balls of fire! She works! running Farcry 4 at Ultra settings at a constant 65fps+ even during gunfights. I didn't actually follow that guide, as i didn't see it until too late, but i did end up converting my HDD into GPT and wiping everything i had. So i had to reinstall Farcry 4, but my OS is now located on my HDD so i suppose somehow the SSD was faulty? Even though Samsung Magician claimed it was running properly. I do not know of any other possible explanation.

Regardless, im happy to be operating at maximum capacity, and the ole rig is at its former glory! I suppose ill wipe my SSD and try to run some games or something on there until i can pick up another larger SSD.

Thanks so much for the help, I'll make sure to pick your suggestion as the answer!

Right, and that is what im currently doing. I reformatted the drive and converted to GPT and just installed windows 10 again. if it works off of this, i will delete from my HDD and basically begin fresh from where i was.
