Hi all,

My name is Roland, long time lurker, first time poster.

I have an issue that I hope you guys can help me with!
My dedicated gaming rig has had a spectacular loss of performance since a few days.
I myself am a potato when it comes to things technical, so I really hope you can help me!
In the middle of a gaming session my performance took a nose dive. And I cant explain why.
Suddenly I went from 60+ fps to 20ish. HELP PLS <3

My rig :

intel i7-6700K @4.00 GHz
16 DDR4 RAM
MSI Z170A mobo
Geforce GTX 980 TI GPU
1x Samsung SSD (windows and such)
1x 1TB disc for games.

If you need more data/details, please do tell me what you need!

edit: It's not temperatures, as the CPU and hardware all stay under 40 degrees celcius according to my Bios. I'll double check this again when I get home.
edit2: Lowering settings in the games won't help!!

Solution
Google "6700k stuck at 800mhz"
Lots of people had this problem, and there's lots of suggestions. Try them one at a time until one fixes it.
First few I saw was multiplier was set to 8 in bios, socket pin got bent, and overly tight heatsink. Lots of others beyond those too.

2 main issues:
Downright performance loss, making windows, programs and internet browsing slower, flash plugin stuff takes much much longer.

and

Huge Fps loss. Where games ran with 60 FPS while streaming no prob before, now I can forget about streaming, and everything runs at 10-20 fps.

I do not know if they are connected, but I would assume so

So its not just the one game, correct? This slow down is system wide?
I'd assume you tried the old "restart your pc" routine, but have you checked for driver updates? The MSI Live app should scan for all system updates that may be required.

no scans
and to reply to Bill, ran live app several times, all drivers are up to date. did not install all the other software that comes with it, only the drivers.

Im starting to think that it might be hardware related, as I have formatted and reinstalled a few times. tried with win 7 as well as win10, but no difference.

Actually, I think its a cpu setting, as the GPU mhz are changing all the time, but the CPU mhz are stuck at 800 mhz
This is a skylake i6700 4.00 ghz.
I wish I knew the proper settings, and how to restore the cpu to these settings!!

Check your power settings in windows. Change from 'balanced' to 'performance' and see if that helps. Seems to be a common issue with the 6700 getting stuck at 800mhz.

this did not work, however i do feel we are much closer to solving the issue.
It is indeed the case, that the 4 cores are all stuck on 800mhz. Any idea how 2 fix?

Turned off the Intel Auto CPU cooler, since that was offered as a fix in the MSI forums, and this fixed the problem completely XD

Just gotta make sure that I keep the temps low.
