Hi, I have a WD external h.d.d and the problem is, its constantly turned on, even after shutting down the pc. the only way to turn it off is turning the power supply off itself. where is the problem? how to solve this? is this because of BIOS settings?

Solution
There used to be a command to park the heads, don't know it works on new drives though. You could also get a USB hub with switches so you don't need to plug it in and out all the time.
Something like this: http://www.trust.com/nl/product/20619-4-port-usb-2-0-hub-with-switches

Hey there, honeyxp.

What's the model of the drive? Basically if the drive is a 3.5" (has an external power source) it won't turn off when the computer has been shutdown. However, it should enter sleep mode after awhile when not being used (being inactive).

Hope that helps.

It's WD Elements (500 GB), and it doesn't enter spleep mode of course. it has a blinking LED which is always blinking every 4 or 5 seconds. and a very very small noise tells me it's working...

My biggest concern is: being always turned on, will reduce it's life. won't it? if it affects its life, and i cannot turn this option off from MB settings, i think i'd better unplug it so.

Basically, as the drive has mechanical parts and if it constantly spins it's only natural that they'll wear out a bit with time. It's weird though that it wouldn't go to sleep mode when not being accessed after awhile.
Is the LED light always on while the drive is being accessed? Basically when the LED is blinking this should be the stand-by/sleep mode.

You could try the drive with a different computer and a different USB cables, to see if the same thing happens.

I keep internal HDDs turned on 24/7 and they last for years. A lot of wear is done while they spin up and switch cold to hot and back. With external drives couple of problems crop up, they may not have as good cooling in an enclosure and are susceptible to damage when jarred or knocked and that's only reasons I would shut them off. I keep mine stored away until needed.

while drive is being accessed, the LED blinks in a faster rate than being in sleeping mode. The blinking rate is much slower in stand by that what it is it while accessing/using it.

I keep it connected because I always need files stored on that because of my job. so I think I should have adopted myself with this constant power-on. And so, you say I must disconnect it whenever I don't need it. so no way to turn it off or put it into sleep mode. thanks a lot <3
