Right i know this has been asked a lot but every single post ive read just says get the 3470 none s version, well my question is i have a 3470s currently in my rig with a r9 279x oc 4gb gpu and 8gb of ram, i was thinking of getting a new mobo as i have a bottle neck in my rig and need more expansion slots, it also occurred to me i could switch to full amd build as my gpu is currently amd, basically all i need to know is should i stick with my cpu and get a new mobo and some ram ( 24gig in total then) or get a new chip and and new mobo either of the 2 in the title cheers in advance

Solution
now I see.
Though ram thing could be solved by 2x8GB kit. over 16GB are very rarely required. like 1 user in 10000 need more than 16.
The rest explains why you need other board.
if you ever want to upgrade, get i5 K series cpu. Cost ~100$, perform within 1-2FPS of the latest gen.
Overclocking it to 4.0Ghz is easy one click procedure. 4.5GHz is also relatively easy even for inexperienced users.
That covers your gaming needs for the next few years on CPU side :)
Remember that buying a new motherboard requires you to buy a new copy of Windows, if it's OEM.

I would just stick with the i5, no reason to upgrade considering not only are you going to lose money, but you're going to downgrade your performance in A LOT of titles if you choose to go with AMD.

The CPU has got QuickSync, so if you're going to render some videos, and the program supports it, then you get delivery codec acceleration, H.264 (.mp4) for instance.

If you want more gaming performance, or performance which requires a stronger GPU, then upgrade the GPU instead of the CPU.

All the best!

thanks for the advice i was just wondering because the cpu i have is the S version of the i5 3470 so its base speed is 2.9 not the 3.2 of the 3740 they both are supposed to turbo to 3.6 but mine never gets past 3.25 for some reason, and on gta v im only able to use around 2gb of my 4gb vram to stay on 60fps ( v sync on) also how do i check if my windows is OEM?

vram utilization has nothing to do with CPU in this case.
do a simple thing
remove vsync and play the game (pay attention to FPS, better record them)
after that, go to settings and lower resolution of the game. play the same part again.
If your FPS is significantly faster - > your CPU is fine and better GPU will give you better performance.
If FPS remains the roughly the same - we will discuss what is the best way to improve your CPU performance.

Quick Sync might be useful if you want to render a video and you don't care about its size or, more important, its quality. If the latter is important to you, then stick with CPU only encoding.

on 1080 i got a min fps of 61 a max of 90 and an average of around 70, on 720 i got a max of 95 min of 61 and average of around 75, on 1440 i got a max of 55 min of 30 and an average of around 49, this is oin max render max population variety and all settings to high with msaa disabled ( i have to re enable v sync when i play properly as i get bad screen tearing on gta v )

thanks man youve been a star, yeah im very confident with hardware ive built many rigs in the past, i think ill go for 16gb 1600mhz ram ( cpu only supports ddr3 1600 highest and next pay day ill move to a k version i5 water cool and OC to around 4ghz, possibly get another r9270x 4gb to crossfire ( if i can find one anywhere ) i know the 270x can also crossfire with the HD 7970 so thats also an option if i cant find another r9, thanks everyone for their help, ill probably start a new thread now to find a decent lga 1155 z77chip mobo my current choice is http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/V7wbjc

but im more and likey going to go for

Your first choice is better for overclocking.
There is a thing called number of power phases. The MSI board have a fantastic power circle for the CPU which is great for overclocking.
When looking for options, make sure there are 8 or more CPU power phases on MB if you really intend to overclock.
The memory, go for the 1866Mhz - they are priced almost the same and any MB will support them (they also tend to overclock to 2000-2133 easily).

The 270x will crossfire with a 7870 NOT a 7970.

I'd hold off on considering a replacement socket 1155 board & CPU - you'll be overpaying for what is essentially out of date stock & a dead socket.

You 3470s is about on a par with a stock 6300 as it stands.

Upgrade properly to a current socket board & cpu when you have the money is my advice.

Vice versa the crossfire idea - by the time you've done you could have sold your existing card , & bought a single rx480 for about the same as it'll cost you for a dual 7870 / 270x setup with none of the pit falls of running a dual card setup.

tbh i could get away with keeping it as it is cuz it games fine, i just like to upgrade and stuff, love to tinker so, its more of a case of want than need, but i might just wait another month get a better i5 ( k version) on a better socket cuz the lga 1155 is really bad ( personal opinion )
