Hello, first time poster here so here goes nothing.

I recently (and by that i mean today) purchased the Sapphire amd rx 480 8gb version and was eager to put it in my computer. However upon removing my previous card and trying to put this one in, it didn't manage to fit in the pci-e slot all the way. So at first i was confused and then realized that my sata ports were blocking the card. I straight away googled the problem and they all suggested angled sata cables, the only problem is my motherboard has the sata ports sort of sticking out(?) so you can plug multiple cables into each port bit. Not a very helpful description but if you Google MSI gaming 970 motherboard you can see what i'm getting at.

So whats the solution? replace the motherboard or send back the new GPU? or can i work around this? Cheers guys.

Solution
^ absolutely , the RX480 sshould fit a 970 gaming fine, I've had a sapphire 290x tri-x on that board (far longer than a reference 480)

As stated , if the latch is locked , the card is fully in the slot.

You should be able to install the RX480 with no interference from the SATA ports. When installed in the PCIe slot properly, the GPU should sit above the SATA ports and not touch them at all. Straight SATA cables would also be fine (as opposed to angled ones) because of the alignment with the ports and the GPU.

It sits above it but it can't get properly into the PCIe slot, because the ports are in the way, i took it out and put back in my GTX 750TI and it works fine because the card is much shorter and doesn't come close to touching the SATA ports.

The case is: ZALMAN Z11 Plus HF1 ATX/M-ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I circled the SATA ports just for reference, this is with the GTX 750Ti in, which doesn't go near the ports

My friend pointed out if the latch engages it is probably in far enough, in which case he said it might be a bios issue not picking up the card? it doesn't show up in device manager or in the bios

Ah so that should be the exact issue? in which case just upgrading the PSU should solve the issue?
